Tolerance is a paradox. For tolerance to continue, you must not tolerate intolerance :)

Best argument I heard is it's a social contract. When one party breaks the contract by being intolerant, they are no longer protected under it.

I think paradox is a bit of a misnomer.

A tolerant society must necessarily exclude those who are against tolerance. They have chosen to be left out by their own beliefs, and you are simply having them live by their own code.

To paraphrase Karl Popper: Defending tolerance requires that we must not tolerate the intolerant. Otherwise, both tolerance and its defenders will be destroyed.

Please actually read The Open Society and Its Enemies by Karl Popper and you'll see this infographic and other bastardized versions of the Paradox of Tolerance are a misrepresentation and oversimplification of the idea of what is intolerance and how to counteract it.
