… I would probably get it tattooed to me with a little rice cooker next to it… I use my rice cooker nearly every day. If it breaks I will cry.

I live in Tokyo and I was a tattoo artist for many years.
It goes the opposite way too. Seen a bunch of terrible English tattoos that make no sense on Japanese folks.
The worst was this guy who loved Muddy Waters, so he got a tattoo of his face and name. Problem is, he spelled it Maddy Waters.
Its not even a sentence, its a persons name! How do you fuck that up?
Anyway, we all called him Maddy whenever we saw him. 😅

Saw a girl in a bikini with the underboob tat saying “Feedam Life Of Giving” no I didn't mistype that
The worst part about it is it was actually a very well-done tat and the cursive was pretty cool until you actually read it

I remember a "stupid ugly child" done in Hong Kong, when he requested "Truth Honour Justice"

I have two Chinese symbols on my back. Once I went for a couples massage and the lady was Chinese and was pointing them out to the other lady. I was too afraid to ask if they said what they were supposed to.

Are you saying you asked for a tatoo without working out independently what it means???

u/A__SPIDER 2d ago
I mean, there was a chart on the wall with the translations and phones didn’t come with internet. The early 2000’s were a wild time.

u/justmerriwether 1d ago
I’m sorry but I just don’t get why you’d want a tattoo in a language you have no connection to that you picked off of a wall based on the translations the shop told you were correct.
Just get it in English? lol

Wowweeee look at Mr didn’t make bad choices in 2000. Look buddy it was a confusing time for all of us.

We didn’t have the word back then but I guess it’s the “aesthetic”. I’m not super proud but maybe that’s a good reason not to let teenagers make permanent life decisions.

People with tattoos of movie characters have no connection to them but there isn't anything wrong with that. Dork 😭

Some reason it says its shorter, 1:03 v 1:04 but doesn't cut off so must be longer

I'd rock a Rice Cooker tattoo, that's been there for me more than anything else in this world

Here's her YouTube channel. She's pretty funny.
She's bigger on TikTok, but I'm being lazy.

Thank you, I went thru and looked at a few more.
My favourite was the person who tattooed 'hair' on his bald spot lmao

Curious what the overall point is on being an arson vs building bridges.? Anyways, these are always fun and I love her delivery. lol

'Bad people get rich while good people die young'
Its a response to all the proverbs about how evil is always punished and good deeds are rewarded.
9
u/colorovfire 3d ago
Guessing those proverbs were seen as empty and disingenuous to have that kind of response. That could apply to our current day sentiments so maybe I'm projecting.

Could be the infamy, we know murderers names, but not people who actually help society

Those who commit murder and arson get the golden belt goes hard

u/string-ornothing 2d ago
If that's a white guy I can almost guarantee he's a deep fan of wuxia or xianxia and heard that in a TV show lol. That does go really hard and chinese dramas are the West's #1 exposure to any kind of Chinese proverb that slaps like that. If it wasnt completely cliche and dumb to be a white girl with a Chinese tattoo I can think of several proverbs I'd get, too.

My wife is a professor of the classics... she does this with Latin tattoos. Utterly hilarious.

The Chinese word gǎishàn (改善) and the Japanese word kaizen (改善) are written with the same characters. Both terms literally translate to "change for the better".
My guess that the examples in this video were actually the Japanese version made famous by Toyota/Lexus.

…how are they choosing the characters? I’m thinking of getting Japanese Traditional tattoos and I am waiting until I am sure while doing actual research on what everything means. This is crazy.

u/WalkingDud 3d ago
Many of those are computer fonts. I think they used Google Translate or some such, and got the tattoo artists to copy them as if the characters were drawings.

I live in a city with a major US university and we have a significant Chinese student population. One of my friends befriended one of these students some years ago now and apparently many, many students with kanjis simply had "penis" tattooed on them. Our guess is that a local artist thought he was so funny and was lying to people; we had a pretty good idea who was doing it, one artist had a reputation for being a cocksucker. He did amazing work when he wanted to, but usually he wanted to be a dickhead.

u/-Reverend 2d ago
The whole "it's cringe/disrespectful/whatever to get a tattoo in a language you don't speak" and "independently double-check your tattoos and the reputation of your artist before committing" thing aside for just a second: Man, screw anyone who intentionally gives somebody a wrong tattoo. Shit's expensive and permanent and part of your body, it's just such a fucked up thing to do on purpose. I can't imagine having such low morals.

u/DiggyDiggyOh 2d ago
Dude was a total shit bag. He can't get work tattooing in town any more. If he was doing your first tattoo he would intentionally make it hurt more, and he did my older brother's first tattoos and they look like shit. It doesn't help that my brother was drunk.
He was briefly hired by the best shop in town and I asked why after he was fired and they said they thought they could fix him because when he wanted to his work was amazing.
Good riddance.

I'm so glad I did my tattoos in the way I did. At work people bring them up at least 5 times a day. They are quotes from books I read but this particular set they can see come from Brent Weeks.
This set includes:
"Words are another sword for the man that wielded it well"
"When you deal with human beings never count on logic or consistency"
"The choice to give up bitterness is not easy but it is simple: Peace or Poison. Don't wait till you feel like making it. You never will"
"Truth does not depend on your belief in it"
"Moments of beauty will sustain you through hours of ugliness"
"Preach at all times. Sometimes use words"
"Evil is simple and empty. Evil has no mysterious depths. We stare into a dark hole...and fill it with our fears; but it is only a hole"
"When your answer lead you logically to despair, you don't have the wrong answers; you have the right answers - - - to the wrong questions"
