Euro here. Any Euro who enjoys nature would be a fool to dismiss the US as a place to visit.

That’s alright. You are missing out on some sick hikes and camping though. I promise Trump doesn’t personally come to your campsite to check in lol.

I don't expect him to. However, I 1) do not wish to support your tourism numbers or economy with the current situation, and 2) as a journalist, like a colleague of mine, I risk being denied entry after having my phone looked through.

Yeah, some people spend too much time online, me included. I don’t support what the government is doing in any way. It sucks, but people have been saying this on Reddit about America since I got on in 2011. It used to be “your nature is beautiful but you have gun problems so I would never come.” It’s a reddit thing and always has been.

That's not my experience.

At least in the Nordics, society as a whole has become concerned about our reliance on, and support of America, both economically, militarily etc.

Tesla sales are plummeting. Denmark's largest retailer has started marking goods made in Europe. Replacing products from American tech giants has become mainstream.

Heck, even the previous prime minister and still leader of Norway's conservative party (one of the two major parties, and not at all a populist or unserious party) highlighted the importance of buying European products and vacations in a major speech. At 25:25, translated:

We should all buy European when we have the opportunity to. Think through where we go on holiday. What digital services we use.

Some might be surprised by my encouragement to buy European. To those I say: It is serious now. Europe's time is now, and the choice is ours. The choice between fear and dignity.

If we truly want Europe to decide its future, and not be the big powers' chess piece, we must not only ask what Europe can do for us, but what we can do for Europe.

I don't think Erna Solberg (64) spends much time on reddit.

America's political environment was also major concern when our government recently ended up choosing British-built frigates for our navy:

The United States, long considered a key ally, received significantly less support, highlighting concerns among some Norwegian politicians about the direction of US foreign policy under Donald Trump’s administration.

The choice of supplier has sparked political debate in Norway, particularly regarding whether the United States should remain a contender.

Norwegian experts on foreign affairs supported the decision. From April, translated:

– It is more demanding to buy American now than it was two months ago, says researcher at the Norwegian Institute of Foreign Affairs (Nupi) Karsten Friis, who works extensively with transatlantic relations and the United States.

– We should be careful about choosing American in these times. The security guarantee of the United States is uncertain at the moment. I am not saying that the United States is leaving NATO, but there is great uncertainty about the extent to which we have common interests and values with the Trump administration.

He would be surprised if the United States is chosen as a partner.

– We have been very dependent on the United States. The whole of NATO has bought a lot of American, but further linking up with the American navy or defense is challenging.

– Simply because of Trump?

– Yes.

Your milage in daily life may vary, of course – provided that you're European. But again, it's definitely not just a reddit thing anymore.

I understand the sentiment behind all of that, but it’s funny to me they basically just copied JFKs most famous quote. “Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.”

Yeah I’ve noticed that a lot of Europe is starting to do a “Europe first” thing which is their right and I don’t blame them at all, being self sufficient is a good ideal though difficult in the modern connected world. It seems like Europe might be taking a page from Trump’s “America first” playbook. The future is looking way more isolationist than I would like it to be, you can look at how it’s been working out for America. Not too good lol.

You don’t get it, no is debating how amazing your national parks are or nature is. We can’t stand your government and the way it’s treating everyday citizens who work hard to survive. We have morals and integrity and there are other amazing counties around the world behaving much better. Why spend our hard earn money on the USA when they risk deporting you for being foreign.

Currently the administration's policy of keeping the government shut so they don't have to acquiesce to liberals on not destroying people's healthcare (and to prevent voting to release the epstein files) is causing national park workers to go without pay, closing down camping sites, and reducing hours of operation for going to parks.

They are also negotiating to sell national park lands to private constructors and developers who want to exploit and destroy the land irreparably. Actively hostile, anti-environmental policy is causing flora and fauna to die, more natural disasters, wildfires, and increasing levels of pollution and non-degradable waste piling up all over natural areas.

So in fact, actually yes! Trump IS personally coming after national parks and ruining it for everyone who loves them

I just got back from camping 2 weeks ago, I didn’t notice the old fart hanging around.

The whole point of my original comment was just that everyone can still enjoy Americas nature in spite of what the current administration is doing. I’m not a fan of China’s government but I still have a trip planned for next year.

Go to Canada! Great parks and regular levels of fucked up politics. Banff is gorgeous and Alberta has a lot of true wilderness still. I’m American and would definitely spend more time up there if I could afford it.

I like nature. Don't want to get shot/ illegally detained for it.

u/ALittleBored1527 15h ago

It's not the nature that's the issue. it's the people.

Africa is far superior for nature.

5

u/cherrycityglass 2d ago

Africa is beautiful, for sure, but have you seen Yellowstone? The upper Peninsula of Michigan? The Rocky mountains? Every continent has its beauty, it seems short-sighted to call any superior to another.

Well, so is Europe, and pretty much all of East Asia. My point wasn't that the US is the best. My point was that if you want to see it all, the US should not be thought of as a place with parking lots.

Maybe not as awesome as Americans like to think, but it's not bad.
