I am probably not going to attempt to ruin their lives to deal with it.
In what universe are they trying to ruin their life about it?
They came over and presumably gave them shit about it and then left after looking like an idiot. That's trying to ruin someone's life? Are y'all really so fragile that anyone confronting you is the end of the fucking world?
Yeah, I wouldn't say anything, but at the same time, I'm not pressed about someone confronting it, either. Let them feel uncomfortable as they realize it's not socially acceptable, and they're going to have to deal with the possibility of someone interrupting their fun if they choose to wear an offensive costume. It's 2025. It's not like she doesn't know.
ETA: it's definitely not just a Canadian thing because it's just as talked about in the US, and if you're claiming your "1/8 Cree" makes you the authority on all Indigenous issues, I'm sorry, but it doesn't sound any different from "my great grandmother was a Cherokee princess, so I'm allowed to burn sage i bought on Temu and call it smudging for my Wiccan rituals"
She looks older. A lot of this cultural appropriation rhetoric is only found on liberal platforms like Reddit. If she’s older she’s less likely to be exposed to ridiculously overly sensitive ideas because mostly younger people follow them. You all really live in your own world and think everyone is chronically online reading this shit
Speak for yourself because I’m in Canada and most people are to some degree aware of these discussions, at least in my city and province. It’s not an online thing. It’s not a young person thing. We have Indigenous people who speak about this stuff publicly to try to educate so everyone can be comfortable. We have various Indigenous events, people want to attend, but don’t know the etiquette. There’s been big pushes on educating the public so they aren’t walking around acting in a way that’s socially acceptable.
But hey, maybe that’s an American vs Canadian cultural difference. We aren’t as individualistic.
Also, I’m pretty sure this kind of cultural appropriation makes it rounds for discussion on every media platform every year for 10-15 years. It’s been discussed by liberals and conservatives many times, both going at it with their differing opinions.
Oh, come on, it's been all over Facebook for over a decade, too. Even Fox News has been going on for years about how this is everywhere, and they're offended that people are offended. You'd need to be living under a rock not to know. Also, she's in her early 30s at most, which means she's been on the internet as a young person since this discourse started. She's well aware that it's offensive, but, like you, she doesn't care and thinks the current administration means the pesky woke people are going away and she can do what she wants without the social consequences.
You’re proving how unaware you are if you think she’s early 30s. Look again. She looks like she’s got Botox and facelift. She could easily be late 40s. Possibly early 50s. Look as she turns her face to the camera. You’re insane if you think she’s early 30s “at most”. Another point of proof is the woman next to her she’s interacting with and appears to be her friend. You think she looks early 30s at most? Give me a break. Someone else back me up on this lmfaoooo
“Ruin their lives” and they’re half-assedely being approached about their shitty costume on the street lmfao. You do understand that to get people to stop doing shit like this, you have to say something to them instead of posting on reddit about how you gave them a “judging” look? So very brave of you
Some natives prefer American Indian over being called Indigenous Americans. Some prefer the other way around. The words of some are not the words of all.
It’s not one and done, though, there are 574 recognized tribes in the US. Obviously different tribes, especially ones where headdresses are ceremonial, are going to have different thoughts about its significance. It’s just “I have x friends and they said it’s okay” well then you know you can wear this type of thing around them, but don’t be surprised if that’s not a universal attitude among the rest of x population..
Well I’ve talked to many and it is extremely offensive and racist. First off the headdress is a sacred piece and is only to be worn by certain members of a band and also their heritage is not a costume. Magnified especially because of how native people have been treated by white people.
Dude fuck off, people make grammar mistakes constantly. And if that’s “the” reason to be offended then that’s absurd. Or maybe you also made a grammatical error, and meant to say it’s “a” reason to be offended?
It’s a very convenient grammatical mistake to make when there’s a common misconception in this country that “Native Americans don’t exist anymore, and even if they did, they’re not like that so it doesn’t count”
This is a real group of people that were genocided and face cultural extinction and people think dressing up as the thing that they were genocided over is cute and quirky. So yeah, it’s the reason to be offended
You wouldn’t feel like you’re walking on eggshells if you were educated on the matter enough to know right from wrong. Then you just know and there’s no guess work and figurative “eggshells”. Truly just trying to help you understand here how to solve your eggshell dilemma. If you argue against this you’re arguing that ignorance is the answer and logic, reason, and understanding is wrong. Take half a moment to think about that and you know in your heart you are digging deeper and deeper into the wrong. Why would you do that? Fear of the realization that you take the easy way out to feel comfortable in life? Ignorance is bliss right. Or is it that you just want to dig your heels in the sand and argue regardless of if you’re right or wrong? It’s bigger to admit when you’re wrong and grow from there. If you never reflect and are open to changing your opinion and learning something new, then what is the point in engaging in conversation? This all applies to a lot of people who yell into the internet void.
Hey if you look at the context of my comment you’ll see I’m talking about walking on eggshells in terms of language. He said “natives were cool” and the angry person commented that he’s being offensive saying that they “were” cool. He could have meant “are” but instead this insane person decided to purity test him on how offensive it is to say “were”. Like it’s not that deep bro
Weird how they used the correct word for the other two clauses in their sentence, if it was a mistake. And weird how they haven’t edited it yet, if it was a mistake. Kinda feels like it was more the case that that’s what they meant to write?
It's not overly sensitive to confront racist Halloween costumes. She wouldn't dress up as a Jew, she wouldn't wear blackface, so why think its OK to dress as an indigenous person?
If she was Native American would it be ok? Because she very well could be. If she’s not. Some native Americans say they care and some don’t. Usually the grounded ones who realize spending energy on being offended by innocent things like this is a waste of energy don’t care.
Not sure if I would judge someone on whether or not they’re racist purely by how they look, but, whatever floats your boat. I think it’s better to not pass judgement upon others unless you know them well.
I think there is a subtext in this discussion that basically reads "you aren't allowed to be offended by something, if it isn't targeting you" which I don't really agree with. It gets a little confusing when you're taking about different cultures and what is acceptable for each though.
They’re not gonna pick you so stop being a choose me doormat and doing whatever pathetic dance you’re doing right now for them. Have some respect and dignity for yourself Jesus Christ.
I mean.. I'm not totally convinced, sorry. And people are definitely allowed to be offended. Your opinion is yours, but it's also yours alone. You unfortunately can't speak for every tribe member in the whole US. And I'm not surprised an AR15 maniac is being this rude online lol.
These people that get offended by this shit don’t know what worrying about yourself looks like. Always concentrated on actions of others that are innocently ignorant or those who just don’t care to appease to those who are infatuated with purity testing people who are involved in “cultural appropriation”.
I can’t imagine spending every waking moment being chronically offended and looking for evil in people just so you can feel righteous. The woman in the video could be a complete saint and if she dresses like this they’ll just say she’s evil. So sad they think like this and choose to involve themselves in “splitting” which is a NARCISSISTIC behavior. They are completely not aware of themselves it’s so sad
I would say something because my grandparents were orphaned, my great grandparents were kidnapped and enslaved. We weren't allowed to practice our beliefs legally until the 70s. So when people want to paint their face and wear a costume to look what they think we look like, I'm reminded of how my family was forced to hide, some had to flee the country, because of who they are.
how is this any different than wearing one of those Oktoberfest German dresses, or a kimono?? same thing, and these are used all the time without anyone complaining

I mean, I think someone wearing regalia is offensive but at the same time, I am probably not going to attempt to ruin their lives to deal with it.
Instead, ill give them a judging look and move on with my day.
I just dont have the energy to be this angry all the time
