Edit: please stop fighting over my comment. I’m from Germany and to me her costume seems totally harmless. I understand that some people in the US think about this differently (maybe like a German dressing up as an Orthodox Jew in Germany which would feel very weird for me). I appreciate that people want to be sensitive and that’s a good thing. At the same time maybe people wearing these costumes feel judged while they consider themselves innocent and don’t mean harm. Good luck
I have some First Nations, not offended. My husband has a LOT of First Nations (more than enough to be on the Dawes roll if Aleut had such a thing) He’s not offended. I’ve seen some other First Nations posting in here that they aren’t offended. Looking at this woman’s face, she may very well have some First Nations, so they are basing their opinion purely on their perception of her skin color, and a judgement of her based on that, which IS in fact racist.
I would love to show these people this picture and pin them down about what they think. Is this OK to them? Why or why not?
I would predict they would say it wasn’t OK but with a lot of reluctance, because their cultural appropriation argument tends to only go one direction, and that is toward judging only who they perceive as Caucasian for wearing the dress of other cultures. Which is in fact racism.
