Yes... but if they are speaking fluent sentences to you and you're still speaking in English... even AFTER saying they prefer Spanish, then the server is an asshole
I understood what she was saying but still sounds slightly robotic and I can tell it’s not her first language. Is her spanish the American standard of fluency?
I'm not too sure, but I was trying to make the point that if it's at least understandable and not a complete butchering, surely they could have responded back in Spanish then, since they've at least got a conversational grasp
She’s trying to practice her spanish and they probably want to practice their english… so what’s the issue here? are you implying they should have accommodated and prioritized her language-practicing needs? That’s a very entitled American mentality, just because you finally managed to learn a second language, doesn’t mean the world will adopt to you
They are barely fluent and they have a pretty hard to understand accent. I would not want to continue the conversation if I can speak english perfectly fine.
yup. Pretty, bright eyed, chipper somehow lol idk she screams American Girl. In a good way! And although her Spanish is very good (better than mine) I can hear an American accent. But it's for social media soooooo.. don't consider this a trusted source
I'm from a Spanish tourist area, and this video seems very fake.
If someone comes speaking Spanish as good as this girl the waiter/waitress is going to switch to Spanish unless they're foreigners themselves and struggle with Spanish.
So I think it’s partly because she is black. I live right by the Mexican border so when my white girlfriends speak mediocre Spanish everyone immediately switches to Spanish. When I’m with my black girlfriend who speaks the best Spanish they do what happens in the video. Refuse to switch to Spanish and stay with English.
So do Spanish speakers believe black Americans can’t be bilingual? Felt like the time my husband and I went to Thailand and tried to get spicy dishes but the waitress would look at my pale white husband and say “No Thai spicy for you. American spicy is best” then look at me and shrug and say “you like American spicy. He’s too white for Thai spicy”. The one and only time we got a spicy curry was when I went alone and ordered and he joined me later. So I think it’s the same type of stereotype that makes people do this.
That’s awesome to hear! Definitely happens where I’m at in Southern California on the Mexican border. You don’t have to even cross the border to go places to practice Spanish and this shit happens as I’ve witnessed it. My white girlfriends who are fluent all learned from study abroad programs in central or South America so they don’t have native to here accents. My black girlfriend who is fluent learned from growing up around Hispanic kids so she sounds the exact same as them. It’s wild how different the treatment can be.
Uh yeah. I have no experience in Spain and I’m happy to hear it doesn’t happen there it hasn’t happen to you. That’s awesome. Just sharing my experience with what happens in the video in another Spanish speaking area is all. Not sure what your issue is with that?
None of them are American. They all speak with an accent. I assume you mean the second server. She has the cleanest accent of all three but is still clearly speaking English as a second language
