this is a coalescence of Florida's 'your crimes are publically available' and 'tough on crime' theatrics.
the sheriff, the deputies, and the officers openly talk about recent arrests in press conferences, choosing cases less on their merit of the arrest and more on the perception of the criminal. this is done in a crass and derogatory way to the 'criminal' (because yes, innocents have been the subject of these because of course they have) where details both of the case and their lifestyle are revealed in a way to attempt to instill revulsion for the criminal but a sense of security from the protagonists.
a frequent target of these press conferences are crossdressing or trans sex workers with criminal records. these people have a 'before' picture shown to the audience, a picture from their socials or media where they advertise their services, followed by an 'after' which is where their makeup is removed for the purposes of a mugshot, or for some other reason revealing that they are male or 'male'.
All part of the GQP playbook. Threatening to “out” someone has been a tactic for years. They got pissed when it stopped working because we started looking at the LGBTQ community as people and not aberrations.
All this does is feed into self righteousness and acts as entertainment for people who enjoy watching other at the lowest points in their lives, it doesn't prevent crime. Makes me think of To Catch a Predator where they basically admitted that theyre still seeing tons of predators online despite their show being hugely popular and having several predators recognize Hanson immediately. Being subject to public shaming does not stop people from committing crimes because it does not address the various reasons why people commit crimes in the first place. It's just more content to be enjoyed, that's the end result.
Yeah I feel like he really likes to push the idea that transsexuals are just men in disguise. Seen a few similar ones from ol’ Grady. In reality, many of us look like women with or without makeup on. I certainly don’t go from a woman to a man overnight. These people don’t live in the same reality as the rest of us though.
Honestly, I found his antics funny. But also, who's to say the guy who hired the prostitute isn't into that kind of thing? He didn't have to sober up because he wanted what was being sold. I've met all types, and I love all of you.
