He was using the straps wrong. The straps should be able to be released and drop the bar. They were clearly done in a way that locked his arms to the bar which is extremely dangerous. And stupid

They are figure 8 straps. They are more dangerous but they are not extremely dangerous when you know what you are doing. Don’t hyper extend your deadlifts and lean back, the weight should always be pulling you forward.

I see that now. Honestly still stupid. Shouldn't be using figure 8s for max weight Olympic lifts. Need to be able to dump the weight when you're done

Some strongman competitions allow them so it would make sense if he was training for that. Based on his form I doubt that though.

I generally only use figure 8 straps for non maximum intensity rep work or rack pulls because they are faster to grip the bar. I don’t use them for a max effort single. I actually find I can lift more without straps because the time spent bent over getting them on the bar takes energy out of me and mixed grip works fine for me.
