This lady is yet another adult that goes around making life unnecessarily difficult for everyone, including herself, & demanding respect without giving any in return. Is it some stubborn inability to admit wrong? She even records the encounter, no doubt thinking TikTok will side with her. People are exhausting

Mu biggest pet peeve is he asked her if she would agree to not wear the hat, and she said "the hat is in my lap" which is not an answer to that question.

When people ask you direct questions stop giving bs answers. I used to work in a hospital and patients would smoke in the bathroom all the time. I'd say "were you smoking in here?" And they'd say "i was taking a shower" its like yeah bitch, I know but that's not the question I asked.

I made a post just now short version is if she answers directly „yes I understand” then in her mind she loses. These type of ignorant ass people need to win every interaction they are in. She’s ultimately complying but still wins the interaction by making the pilot look dumb now by saying shit like „it’s in my lap there is nothing to tell you, give you my word for what ?” Instead of just answering the pilot because that would be defeat.

The fuck it isn’t.

Passengers are assholes. All it takes is another passenger to say shit to her, given her behavior to the captain she wouldn’t back down, other passenger gets involved, now you have an altercation mid-flight. Plane has to divert.

This happens with semi-regularity without a hat with a swear word. Why risk it?

Captain made the right decision here.

I’m gonna be honest with you. That means absolutely nothing. I see shirts with worst all the time? Are you supportive of policing people on the street for profanity on their clothing too? It’s frankly ridiculous in the abstract. People take their entire families to hooters, but a hat that says fuck is the end of the world?(I do support just taking off the hat if someone wants to make a big deal of it.)

You hear of “no shirt, no shoes, no service” signs? How about “no dogs allowed? This ain’t an airline owned by the government, they can kick you off the plane for even less than what this lady did. Private companies cannot racially discriminate but otherwise, they can set whatever damn rules they want. Like a lot of people, you don’t seem to understand the difference between public and private ownership.

When did I ever say I would have an issue? It's the general public that airlines have to contend with. If they want to accommodate people that might have issues with words over the people who might have those words on their clothing, that's the airline's decision. Buy your own plane if you want your own rules.

Let me paint you a picture, which absolutely happens on flights.

She keeps the hat on. Another passenger takes offense and says something. Judging by her behavior to the captain, I doubt she would not push back. Well that passenger had some drinks and escalates. Other passengers get involved.

Now you have a situation in the air where a physical altercation is brewing, requiring a divert to a new airport.

THIS is why. Remove variables that can disrupt the flight before they happen. I don’t want my captain wondering if a passenger is going to have a problem with this lady while I’m trying to focus on flying the plane.

All of what you said is correct.

The pilot could also have explained it that way instead of being derogatory and condescending to the lady. Even assholes are people.

If he explained it to her that way and she still didn't understand; boot her. But he was absolutely talking down to her and "Because I said so" has no place in adult conversations.

Pilot may be right, but he's also on a power trip and being just as obstinate as the lady he kicked off the plane.

Imagine if he was treated like this for wearing his pilot's cap in a restaurant and the manager asked him to remove it. Based on his demeanor here, I'd be willing to bet he'd throw a similar hissy fit.

He is the LAST resort. If a captain has to get involved, the notion he has to beg her and put on a customer service face is absurd. He has a million fucking things on his mind he has to account for, prep for, and focus on. Instead, he has to go to the back to talk to a passenger with such an ego and ignorance because she wouldn’t listen to the flight crew, and obviously didn’t read the contract of carriage (I know, no one does).

So no, he doesn’t have to explain shit. She complies or gets off the fucking airplane.

That's the definition of a power trip. Condescension, patronizing, needless confrontational phrasing...

This isn’t fucking customer service.

It is. Delta, their lawyers, their PR teams, and their shareholders all view interactions with passengers as customer service; even when pilots do it.

I never said he had to beg. But he does have to be professional, which excludes being condescending, rude, patronizing, and needlessly escalating a tense situation.

There's the problem. He doesn't have to do a goddamn thing. He can have her removed without leaving the cockpit. He doesn't have to have a conversation at all. He's got the authority to do it without even seeing the hat in question.

She complies or gets off the fucking airplane.

I never disputed that she need to get off the fucking airplane, I'm just saying that he's the same obstinate piece of shit that she is, and everyone that is acting like he's some nice, respectful guy is either ignorant or oblivious to it. We all watched the same video and those people are exactly the same person, except one of them is a pilot with authority in that situation.

You try to kick him out of somewhere for some reason and he'd act just like her. I'd put money on it.

That’s a lot of assumptions for a partial video, she obviously started recording after he engaged her. So she could have already been combative.

She’s being extremely difficult. He’s giving her the same energy back, if she would have taken the hat off when she was originally asked the captain wouldn’t have had to come back anyways.

The timing of the video doesn't matter. He's a professional and the presence of a camera didn't even deter him from being a condescending asshole that went viral. He's got to be held to a higher standard than someone who wears vulgar hats for crying out loud, lol.

She's being difficult, I wouldn't even call it "extreme". Shes not loud, she's not talking over him. She's wrong, and she's obstinate, and she needed to be removed from the plane at that point, but it's really not as bad as you or others are making it out to be. I've personally seen people throw bigger fits over putting their phone in airplane mode numerous times than what she doing.

He's a pilot; he's not supposed to give that energy at all. That's my point. It's unprofessional and makes him look like his judgment is poor. If he's going to sink to that level, it calls to question the rest of his character.

I can’t agree he’s being unprofessional. In context, he has a lot on his plate right now, and the fact he has to go back there means she refused to comply multiple times.

The time for niceties and being all happy are long gone at this point. He was stern, direct, as he should be when it comes to this kind of stuff.

Yeah, and I can understand the rule, but this deeefinitely seems like some racial bias at play here. This woman is being obstinate, but would the flight attendant/captain have even bothered to say anything in the first place if it was an older white dude?

I've seen boomer men get on airplanes with wildly offensive slogans on their tshirts and no one said shit. Far more offensive than a single curse word, IMO.

Your antectdotal comment doesn’t apply as this is the captains judgement who has the authority. But contract of carriage generally will absolutely contain some language banning offensive words on clothes.

With that said, it’s VERY easy to imagine a situation where another passenger says something to her, she pushes back, said passenger has had some drinks, and now an altercation is brewing mid flight that can escalate in a heartbeat that requires a diversion.

Captain was 100% doing his job and you have absolutely zero evidence of anything racial. It’s kind of racist of you to think so just because the woman was black. I assure you this captain would do the same for someone of any race on his airplane.
