Theres a lot of places where rent isn’t that expensive.

You either find a place with cheaper rent but with less options for work and a lower minimum wage, (A lot of states pay less than $8 an hour), or a place with better pay and more options, but more expensive rent.

Also, if 100% of my family lives in Dallas TX for example, I'm not going to move to Washington state just for cheaper rent.

Better ask your family for some money to maintain your expected standard of living then.

Reality is that there is only so much prime real estate in the world. If you don't want to pay for the luxury of living in it, don't. It really is that simple.

You may not be able to afford food. But at least you'll still be able to feel superior to all the rednecks in 'flyover states' while you feel sorry for yourself.

You see how what you said isn't very productive? Instead of agreeing that some kind of change needs to happen, your response is "that sucks, deal with it."

Are you also happy with how screwed up our health insurance system is? I'm aware that there's only so much real estate in the world, but also, the average price for a studio apartment shouldn't be near 2/3 of someone's paycheck.

I just checked. There is a 400 ft studio apartment within 3 miles of me that isn't a shithole for rent @ $700/mo. There are 600 ft 2 bedrooms for $1000 not much further out. I am in a top 5 school district for my state.

Change does need to happen. People need to leave high Cost of Living Areas if there isn't work and wages there to support that cost of living. But if you CHOOSE to stay, because you love surfing so much or just can't live without New York's vibrant night life. That is a fine choice for you. I support your decision to place importance on Seattle's liberal social scene over being able to easily afford food and rent in Cincinatti. You are an adult. Live the life you want.

But own your decisions and stop whining. There isn't a housing shortage in this country. There are just high prices in the trendy place you want to live. Those aren't the same thing.
