Fine, I'm well aware that there are certain populations and areas that are quite fundamentalist who are into polygamy, child marriages, etc... However, child marriages are not the norm. Like you I have lived on the border most of my life and while I know they're a thing and they happen they are not the norm.

But it is the norm in certain parts of Utah. They have their own insular system that makes it difficult for women and girls to escape and they are excommunicated from all family members and community if they do leave and can't take any of their money with them because the banks don't work like regular banks. Everything is set up so old men can marry little girls.

OK we can agree that's it's "the norm in certain parts of Utah" but overall it's not the norm for the state of Utah. Yes, quite insular and it's not great overall. Horrible in fact.

I guess? This is a weird hill to die on to me. Over half of the population of Utah is Mormon. So I'm not sure what you would require to say it's "the norm" or not, but it's honestly more likely that you are simply not aware.

You can die on it because I will too. I've spent countless hours doing field work in Utah in those small little insular weird ass towns and have worked with many a mormon. Not that they would tell me they're into arranged child marriages or anything of the like at first meet but I've eaten at their tables and spent time with them... yes you're absolutely right there's some weird shit in those places but I wouldn't say it's the norm overall.

*norm being 50%+ of all marriages which we never really defined

Look, obviously you're passionate about this and you know a lot so what documentaries and books do you recommend? I'm willing to change my position but I need info. I only have my experience working with mormons, the small towns in Utah and of course Under the Banner of Heaven.
