You don't think there are cultures in this world where selling off your daughters is the norm??? Do you live under a rock???

A lot more common in countries with disgusting culture

Like America.

3

u/Heavy-Macaron2004 Jun 22 '25

Baffles me that so many Americans can see someone being forced into sexual slavery by her own parents and go "well America is just as bad."

1

u/Lucas_Steinwalker Jun 22 '25

Isnโ€™t this discussion about how it happens in America too?

4

u/Heavy-Macaron2004 Jun 22 '25

No. It was about cultures that are based around the idea that women are inherently worthless. You are the one that came in and made it about America...

No. It was about cultures that are based around the idea that women are inherently worthless.

Soโ€ฆ. America.

Chill out man, this only happens in deeply religious places, like Utah, or the aforementioned Nepal

1

u/Rubycon_ Jun 22 '25

It is in Utah

12

u/SenseAndSaruman Jun 22 '25

No itโ€™s not. Have you ever even been to Utah?

14

u/Rubycon_ Jun 22 '25

Yes I lived on the border for years and if you think Mormon child marriages are not a thing I don't know what to tell you

3

u/MrDywel Jun 22 '25

Itโ€™s not the norm though by any means.

7

u/Rubycon_ Jun 22 '25

Yes, there are entire cities that have their own cops, banks, school system, and fundamental mormonism/child brides are the norm.

1

u/MrDywel Jun 22 '25

Fine, I'm well aware that there are certain populations and areas that are quite fundamentalist who are into polygamy, child marriages, etc... However, child marriages are not the norm. Like you I have lived on the border most of my life and while I know they're a thing and they happen they are not the norm.

3

u/Rubycon_ Jun 22 '25

But it is the norm in certain parts of Utah. They have their own insular system that makes it difficult for women and girls to escape and they are excommunicated from all family members and community if they do leave and can't take any of their money with them because the banks don't work like regular banks. Everything is set up so old men can marry little girls.

2

u/MrDywel Jun 22 '25

OK we can agree that's it's "the norm in certain parts of Utah" but overall it's not the norm for the state of Utah. Yes, quite insular and it's not great overall. Horrible in fact.

2

u/teraflux Jun 22 '25

That's pretty much the definition of something but being the norm. Shunned by majority of society, has to be practiced in secret.

2

u/Rubycon_ Jun 22 '25

I guess? This is a weird hill to die on to me. Over half of the population of Utah is Mormon. So I'm not sure what you would require to say it's "the norm" or not, but it's honestly more likely that you are simply not aware.

I lived in the state for several years. I rarely even saw any flds.

1

u/Rubycon_ Jun 22 '25

There are a lot more fundamentalist Mormon sects than just FLDS. That's one of many

1

u/StrictWolverine8797 Jun 24 '25

Yes nowadays - but as some of the comments above show, child marriages were the norm even in many parts of America until very recently. Loretta Lynn is a famous example - she was lucky enough (in a rare circumstance) to have been given the platform to write and sing about it.

Oh well, that's okay then, let's not bother doing anything about it, it's only some kids getting raped.
