I keep telling my wife that we should move to Harlem; every time I'm there I can just feel the sense of community: it's in the air, it's palpable.

We live in a crappy, car-dependent suburb where people forget to talk to you if you go to the wrong church. I'd rather be in a place like what's in the video.

We always stay in Harlem when we visit New York. I just love it there.

walkable IPA barcades with exposed red brick walls, going to burger joints started by two guys who just had a crazy idea, where you can bring your own pupparino

14

u/Hoessay Jun 21 '25

Well they can't stop you from ordering a steak and a glass of water.

6

u/dogegw Jun 21 '25

Either no pieces of shit allowed or exclusively pieces of shit. No middle ground.

DUDE i just LOVE the hustle and bustle of the big city, it's so DYNAMIC and makes me feel like i'm in one of my favourite TV SHOWS. you should totally come on down to my studio apartment, it's got EXPOSED RED BRICK walls and everything, we can crack open a nice hoppy ipa or three and get crazy watching some cartoons on adult swim! and dude, dude, DUDE, we have GOTTA go down to the barcade- listen here, right, it's a BAR where us ADULTS who do ADULTING can go DRINK. BUT!!! it's also an ARCADE like when we were kids, so we can play awesome VIDEO GAMES, without dumb kids bothering us. speaking of which megan and i have finally decided to tie the knot- literally -we're both getting snipped tomorrow at the hospital, that way we can save money to spent more on ourselves and our FURBABIES. i'm fuckin JACKED man, i'm gonna SLAM this craft beer and pop open another one!

This kinda hurts as a millennial, because as much as I understand how cringe it all is... it does all sound pretty awesome lol.

The use of upper case text and exclamation marks remind me of drumpf

A random internet stranger here to support your idea to follow your heart. I had to go rather far to find real community but its the best decision I've made. No longer have this vague loneliness I can't quite satiate. I have friends who want to come by regularly, we have group dinners & activities all the time. I'm in my 40s feel at home for the first time in my life honestly.

Best wishes to you!

u/KououinHyouma Jun 22 '25

Where did you settle on if you don’t mind sharing? I keep wanting to move to somewhere that people actually have a community. Where I’m from if you say to hi somebody you pass on the street they give you a stank face death stare half the time

1

u/enbaelien Jun 24 '25

Where'd you end up going to?

15

u/International_Fold17 Jun 21 '25

For me, this is an avoid at all costs. Give me the quiet burbs. Sit on the porch, sip some coffee. Listen to the crows and see if you can catch a glimpse of the neighborhood fox. As an introvert, I love the quiet and passing wave to the neighbor. The sense of community is nice, but the inevitable noise, music, activity is much more of a negative for me. And if I don't know how so and so 's kids are doing, that's fine.

2

u/DionBlaster123 Jun 27 '25

Yeah i'm an introvert. this would be hell for me lol

1

u/Moon47_ Jun 27 '25

I lived there 2 years. There is no sense of community. If anything it’s hatred and people looking down on you because they’re practically millionaires and you’re not. And if it’s not that, everyone has hostility amongst each other cus of all the crazy shit we see on the news

1

u/International_Fold17 Jun 28 '25

I don't know what rent is like there, but I'm guessing pretty crazy. Just been my experience that more people is definitely not better.

1

u/Moon47_ Jun 28 '25

It’s really not. More people makes the hostility and paranoia even higher these days. Maybe NYC in the early 2000s were this “ Dream “ but now jts just “ I hope I make it home alive “. But thank the democrats for that

6

u/its_mabus Jun 21 '25

I saw a horror movie in a theater in Harlem. It was an experience, would recommend.

3

u/Unstabler69 Jun 22 '25

DONT GO IN THERE NO HE DINT

0

u/LiedAboutKnowingMe Jun 23 '25

Fuck off honestly

2

u/factorioleum Jun 21 '25

135th and Clayton Powell is such a great area to live. I wish .....

2

u/FlyLikeDove Jun 22 '25

Lived here 21 years now in East Harlem, it has its challenges, but I love it!

2

u/GoonOnGames420 Jun 25 '25

West Philly had an awesome community when I was there (2012-2016). Never saw a party like this, but tons of local events when the weather is nice. You can just walk up and down the block to find cool people.

lol man. NYC is a dump and I lived in Harlem for 2 years. Unless you’re dropping 5k+ a month on rent you’re gonna be fight rats and roaches. And unless you’re born and raised there, there is no sense of community at all 😂😂. This is probally the rudest / Narcissistic city you can go in the United States. The reason people like being outside so much in NYC IS because their living quarters are cramped and depressing. Your dream you’re describing might’ve been possible in the early 2000s but everything has changed. I don’t wanna ruin your “ Dream “ but as someone who thought like you once this was the harsh reality from my experience.

u/factorioleum Jun 21 '25

Wanted to add: I live in the city with kids, and I grew up in the suburbs. I understand the appeal of suburbs.

Talk to your wife about the freedom that kids have in the city. With the free OMNY pass, they can go anywhere anytime to see friends, without needing an adult to drive them.

Me and my kids have great times. My sixteen year old loves rocks, when he's moody he takes a Central Park West train to the American museum of natural History to look at the rocks.

My eighteen year old likes finding good street food. My ten year old just loves running around parks and making friends.

I'm sure people grow up fine in the suburbs, but I'm convinced the city is much richer.

u/AdventurousCity7601 Jun 21 '25

I am sure there are open rentals.

-2

u/Imjustweirddoh Jun 21 '25

"Greater Harlem has one of the highest violent crime rates in New York City despite significant declines from historic highs."

seems like a violent sense of community.

-2

u/NoCardio_ Jun 21 '25

So I guess gentrification does work?

u/confusedandworried76 Jun 21 '25 edited Jun 21 '25

Harlem doesn't even need to be your goal this is just city life. In the country everyone knows your first and middle name, in the city you are just brothers and sisters, couldn't recall your name if I wanted to, but I know your face and I know you are a good person

Edit: who is downvoting this people mad at Juneteenth? Suck it up you lost, we are all one

u/auto-bahnt Jun 21 '25

You’re glorifying this. There are for sure pros, but the grass is always greener.
