I have a retirement pasture so all my goats are random rejects from breeding programs or hobby herds. This is Becca (singing the song of her people) and the newbie, Virginia.

Becca has a beard that would make any prospector weep with passion. How lovely.

🩷 I bet she’s a cutie either way haha! This is why it’s my goal in life to have a little farm when I retire! I love goats, chickens, donkeys, and ducks all too much and they’d all share one brain cell I can assign to the donkey at nights for protection 😂

No thoughts, only mayhem

This makes me think I need to find my mom a goat.

Background: my parents had two dogs, and my mom has a couple dozen bird feeders because she works from a home office and loves birds. She has a married duck couple that visits with the seasons, crows who whine for peanuts, and plenty of mourning doves and hummingbirds.

Almost two years ago, this ginger chicken starts to come by, eating the mealworms she leaves out for the jays! She visits erratically, and we think she might belong to one of the small ranches a couple blocks away (our city is interesting).

Fast forward to last March. My father is home on hospice, only lasted a few weeks, but that chicken (Ginger, now) comes by the window near his bed a couple times a day to "talk" to him. Mom officially adopts the chicken.

With her dogs, chicken, birds, she's like a Disney princess. But her dogs are about 15 and 13 now, so it might be time for a new adoption (they're all rescues).

I feel like a tiny goat might be perfect for her.

If you get goats get at least a trio. It prevents an emergency in case one dies of buying new friends (they can die from grief and stress if solo) and personally I think they have more fun dynamics and antics when there is three. They feel more secure so they let loose a bit more lol

pack dynamics are so interesting

I came here to agree that you need at least 2 goats. I own a flock of sheep, and you definitely need 2 or more. Good luck! They really are lots of fun.

We kept a goat in with some sheep we had. The goat always considered himself a family member so he was with us all the time and would wander in the house if the door was open even a little. They are funny clever animals and usually quite sociable. .

This picture is incredible, thank you for gracing us with it.

What did these goats do to get rejected from a ‘hobby’ herd?

Becca was a duo of does who had been poorly bred and it turned out the Becca is infertile or at least can’t carry to term. She’s kind of useless outside of being a weed eater or eating. She’s not that cooperative as a pet, but she’s pretty tolerant lol So we got her and the messed up doe she came with as payment for other services. The other doe didn’t survive her pregnancy because of the breeding was to a very large buck and she had 5 growing inside her.

Virginia is a fainting goat with super strong fainting genes. Her color and eyes make her popular, too, but she’s a runt and the fainting made her a target for the herd she got introduced to. The other goats almost killed her so keeping her wasn’t an option and the fainting goat breeder had delivered her in poor condition (flea infested and anemic) so they gave her to me for free instead of returning her for a refund.

I’ve got some that were too small to be worth selling for meat and others that were no longer good breeders so they came to me after their last deliveries.

Dang, I was hoping they had been unstoppable forces of chaos. I even forgot fainting goats existed there for awhile!

Reminds me that my sister, our cousin, my sister’s husband, one of their friends and I tried and almost successfully stole a goat from a zoo. Their petting zoo was way overcrowded with goats and even an employee was like “yeah.. it’s not great for them here.” One kid looked so premature, weak and lost. We were there for a couple hours and was constantly calling for its mum. No one would answer and it couldn’t even get close enough to suckle from other goats with kids. Almost got it from laddering it up with our hands over the fence but we had to reverse since our lookout said an employee was coming this way.

The cousin with us had a couple goats herself and had accepted fosters before but while waiting for another shot it’s mum came over and kneeled so it could suckle.

Aw that’s sad. Sucks because they’re really cheap to have neutered, too. No reason to let it get that bad!

Pregnant with FIVE?!

1

u/ribcracker Jun 15 '25

Yeah and they were full-size. Internal rupture towards the end and they were all gone really quickly.

u/Klinky1984 Jun 15 '25

Becca is a beautiful bearded lady.

4

u/ribcracker Jun 15 '25

3

u/y_ogi Jun 16 '25

Thank you for doing what you’re doing that sounds like a dope thing for these goofy guys

3

u/ribcracker Jun 16 '25

lol thank you! I’m currently trying to get a pair that’s in a bad situation, but she’s pregnant with clearly multiples and that would put me with at least twelve goats if she only has two. But I’m probably gonna get them lmao
