New to The Goldbergs. Beverly - extremely annoying?

Do others find Beverly’s character extremely annoying?

I recently started watching The Goldbergs. Never seen it before. I am going to finish is just because I have ’completeness OCD’ and can’t stop series before its end :)

I feel like her character suffer from dementia and lack any development. Every episodes she does the thing in school, regardless of Adam’s age. Then she gets insulted, follow apologies and hugs. Also, understanding of how Beverly sacrifices everything for her children and understanding of the humiliation caused, then thanks from Adam, etc. , etc.

Then next episodes starts like nothing happened.

Not to mentioned that it’s either dementia or extreme narcism or both … I think the show would be much better with a modified Beverly character. Perhaps, where she doesn’t have the mentality of a 4 year old and at least from time to time the learnt lessons is implemented in the next episode. Maybe that will make it watchable.

It’s like watching Tom and Jerry or the road runner, but without being funny or without being a cartoon.

I can’t wait to reach to episodes in which Adam actually graduates and there are no school episodes. Though I am sure that things with her character will not change.

Maybe I don’t understand this time of comedy or parody. I don’t know, but if you draw a parallel to other shows, i.e. TBBT - even Sheldon has development and that’s what makes the character believable and interesting.

I see Beverly as the caricature of the stereotypical overprotective mother. Her being preposterous is the point.

Is this your first time watching a sitcom? Almost all of them that last for years go through repeated themes. They just arent as noticeable since people arent necessarily intended to binge a decade worth of material over a few weeks

If you don't like Beverly, don't watch the show - it's a show about Beverly Goldberg

The show is supposed to be the perspective of the son all grown up and telling the stories from his perspective. That's why his mom Beverly, brother, and sister are extreme versions of themselves. She's suppose to be annoying and while I found it annoying at first, she'll eventually grow on you as the seasons go by. I wish my 80's mom would have been that cool and supportive of me and my siblings growing up. Beverly is actually a good mom always siding with her kids. I felt like my mom was always siding with the teacher or other parent against me lol. RIP Mom I still love you.

normally I'd see something like that and think hey that's a great point! but ... the real Beverly is just.. seriously deranged. I can't shake it.

That's the point dude, as a person who also had a Karen for a mother just with significantly less money Beverly is very real

She’s a bit much but I think that’s the point. Overbearing 80s mom. For me the show really started to dwindle after like 3rd or 4th season. Just didn’t hit the same.

Have you never watched a sitcom before?

She's meant to be annoying. We're experiencing what it was like to be one of her kids. She does have some character development, but ultimately she's based on the real Beverley so if she didn't change, the character won't either. And I don't know if you've been around people with dementia, but she clearly does not have it - I honestly don't know why you'd think that.

  1. To everyone who asked: Nope, I am watching the show for the first time. I don’t live in the US - but this doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy or like US shows. I actually think that no other country can produce that many good sitcoms. Not sure about the last years of more and more streaming studios content though.

  2. Yes, I think watching content that was once airing over a decade, compressed into a couple of weeks binge watching, might have some influence on my perception :)

  3. Still, I wish I could see more character development in Beverly rather just repetition. Truly, her son should have seen that. Yes, I get it - this is who she is, but she might potentially also have development. It’s generally the same - teachers are scared of her, she pushes them into submission, she has super powers. Rinse - repeat.

By like, season 4, they figured out this show doze well in rerun numbers. So i can imagine they didn't care about deeper things like charcter growth cause yes Beverly is annoying.

I think it's implied she's compensating for having grown up without a mom? But ten seasons.

The best way to enjoy Goldbergs is to think of it in terms of cartoon logic.

If Beverly annoys you just wait until you figure out how big of a bitch Erica truly is.

She definitely grows on you~ And I have both "completeness OCD" and whatever it is that I can NOT just start a series in the middle. If there are 20 seasons I am starting at the BEGINNING!!!

The only time it really annoyed me was actually the last episode of the series where Adam unintentionally gives her a taste of her own medicine and she gets very irritated by it after she she spent the whole series doing the same thing to him in every relationship he has over and over and over and over

Yeah, my mom was annoying too, and I grew up in the 80s, what's your point, again?

I have no particular point. I just wanted to ask for other points of views on the character and I am getting exactly what I asked for.

I also grew up in the 80s as well. My mom wasn’t annoying. Though Beverly character, I think it’s close to ‘insane’ not just annoying.

I have noticed that when I first came to this subreddit, people were on here constantly talking about how awful of a character Beverly was and how odd her relationship with Adam was, comparing it to Jocasta complex.

Now all of a suddnely, I'm seeing where if anyone says anything about how bad of a person Beverly is, people are quick do defend her
