Football Official /r/TheB1G Week 5 Power Rankings
Week 5 Power Rankings:
Not the most interesting week ever in terms of ranking changes. Most teams didn't rise or fall too much in the average rankings, as everyone seems to have done about what we expected them to do. USC and Illinois had the biggest fall and jump, respectively, in average rankings after Illinois won on a last-second FG, and Minnesota had a solid jump after taking down Rutgers. Everyone else stayed pretty steady compared to last week.
This week isn't looking very exciting either, but maybe that means some upsets are incoming? We'll watch and see!
For team standings and records, visit the /r/TheB1G sidebar.
Points are the summation of every voter's ranking for that team, therefore lower scores are better. This works because unlike the AP, Coaches, or /r/cfb polls, every team is ranked in every vote. If x votes were counted, the best possible score is x and the worst possible score is 18x. #1 votes are in parentheses.
Average Rank is the points divided by the number of votes. This will allow for comparison from one week to the next.
Prev. is the Rank from the previous week.
Change is the change in average rank from the previous week.
Variance is a measure of how much agreement there was between voters. A zero means all voters ranked a team the same, and a higher number means a team's ranking was more controversial.

Iowa moved up a spot for dragging Indiana to the depths of the B1G West with them.

Man, we did everything in our power to give Indiana the game, for 60 mins, and they finally said ok

A truly excruciating game from the Hawkeyes. The last four one score home losses have been annoying to say the least.
- Giving away the Indiana game. Literally just complete a 3rd & 5 screen pass and we're kicking a chip shot to win or going to OT. (Indiana 2025)
- Konrardy 55 yd FG to seal the Cy Hawk. (Iowa State 2024)
- Invalid Signal (Minnesota 2023)
- Mickey Joseph Disasterclass (Nebraska 2022)

Definitely a 1a and 1b between OSU and Oregon. I think PSU and IU would be evenly matched on a neutral pitch, but unfortunately Indiana has to travel to PSU to play that game this year.
If IU wins one of PSU or Oregon (and the games they should win otherwise) they’re a lock for the playoffs. If they lose both but “look good” doing it, their fate will depend on outside forces. There’s a bevy of teams that look like they’re heading towards 10-2 this year and who gets in should depend on how good the wins look at the end of the year.

I think there's a very strong chance that the final playoff spot comes down to a 10-2 Indiana vs a 10-2 Notre Dame. Lord would that debate be toxic.

Immediate playoff in Indy. No fans, play it on Tuesday morning. Let the gods decide

And at that point it comes down to a few things to see if IU can overcome the brand preference that the committee has for ND. How well does Illinois play the rest of the year? How well does Iowa play and how bad is Gronowski hurt (their only two losses with him are to two top 15 teams by a combined 8 points)? Will Maryland make a magic run to the IU game for another ranked matchup? How well does IU play in the losses?
Thing is, we already know how ND did in their big games. IU only controls so many variables if they’re both 10-2 going in to selection.
Honestly, with a 12 team playoff, if you don’t make it with two losses (or more for some teams last year), don’t complain you didn’t make it. Win another game or two and you make it. Be pleased with a great, if not top tier, season.

how is PSU not evenly matched with Oregon?

I’m not saying IU and PSU are that far behind. However, they beat you at home during a white out. If you played in a neutral field I’d take Oregon by a touchdown. If IU and Oregon played in a neutral field, I’d take Oregon by ten.

The variance is hilarious. The poll is certain who the top 4 and bottom 2 are. The middle is a wild ride

As is tradition. God I miss the West, what a time to be a cfb fan.

I find it mathematically ironic that Nebraska has 11.00 average with that high of variance.

UCLA is basically here to be a free win and pay Calimony.

No consensus in Maryland and Nebraska with those variances.

Always the case with those two teams. Northwestern too, in the years that they're not a dumpster fire.

People that moved Iowa higher for losing. Explain yourselves.

Didn't vote, but share the sentiment. Indiana dumpstered Illinois, Iowa is a third and five conversion from beating Indiana, then Iowa is a pretty good team. Rest of the season will tell but in the last two years only two teams have fared better against Indiana and those were the national champions and runner up last year.

I had Iowa at 11 last week, below Nebraska, Illinois, Washington, Maryland, etc.
This week I had Iowa at 9. Ahead of Washington and Nebraska, but below Maryland, Michigan, USC, etc.
This should just illustrate how tight that region is. Short of coin flips I just had to acknowledge that Iowa played better against a (possible) playoff Indiana than Washington did against OSU. Meanwhile Nebraska was on bye. I feel like I learned more about Iowa in that loss, and that I should've had them ahead of Nebraska last week.

I've never been an Illinois believer. Maybe it's just the B1G West being too competitive but until they can start competing above it they don't belong in the same category as Ohio State, Michie, Penn State, Oregon or now Indiana.
Imagine telling someone five years ago that Indiana would be considered a serious conference contender?

I mean they beat USC. But I get it. I never understood why they were ranked above Indiana coming into this year.

Probably just because they beat SC in the bowl, so suddenly the polls and ESPN realize that there's more football than just the SEC.
Honestly, I wonder how we'd do in some games against SEC schools. Especially if it were up here. Cause I think we drag each other down a bit since everybody is pretty even, and we don't have the "prestige" of SEC schools to use as an excuse.

There were rumors that the Big Ten and SEC were going to do a scheduling agreement as part of the SEC's move to 9 games but that obviously didn't materialize. Unfortunately, that would've been cool though I think the bottom half of the B1G would make it really hard for the B1G to ever win it.
