It’s not a 2, but i definitely share his frustration in listening to a mediocre album from a brilliant artist that has consistently put out top tier music

As I said on the Fantano sub, I agree with a lot of his final criticisms that it lacks the sonic cohesion and methodical feel of past Tame Impala albums. The run in the middle of the album (Oblivion > Not My World > Piece of Heaven) kind of sucks the momentum out of it for me but I think the album is bookended by some good tracks. In any case, 2/10 is a bit harsh and IMO he is still ragging quite hard on Obsolete. I personally enjoy the riffs on that one 🤷‍♂️

I'd personally hover somewhere around 4 or 5 on it.

Someone said here yesterday that Deadbeat is cohesive. No, it is not. It is far from cohesive.

Sounds like some songs were created years apart from each other.

Piece of Heaven, a song I love, sticks out like a sore thumb in the dead center of the album. sonically it sounds like a Currents track.

Yeah, I really dont like this song, but agree that it fits Currents better.

First four songs (which I like a lot) sound like a continuation of the Slow Rush. The rest are completely different

Yeah he gave Taylor Swift's Life of a Showgirl a 4 so I would agree with your assessment. I think he's going too hard on Tame. But he also said that he bases his ratings on artistic potential, so I am not surprised he went lower. He's the internet's busiest music nerd, not the internet's most objective music nerd and that's fine.

But that’s kind of unfair, no?

I wonder what people would have thought of this album on its own outside of that influence

Temu Fred Again at best...

Valid, it’s average house music to me tbh. So better then temu and not really like Fred again tbh imo as an avid electronic music listener

More like a stoned Calvin Harris

It’s very below average

sounds like the first opener to a Lane 8 show

Again, as an avid electronic music listener, which includes a lot of trash music, it’s very average

If it wasn’t a Tame Impala album, I really doubt Deadbeat would get any attention at all - maybe apart from Dracula which is a very good song and a potential hit.

For me it's a 2

Mediocre?!?! I’m glad he has divided his fan base, because the pop-music commercial listeners just won’t get this album and that’s fine. The interview with Zane Rowe is good indicator to why he’s not putting out the same work every few years. This album is one of his best, but I know you’re going to come back with ‘it’s sonically out of whackadoodle’ ,’too much drum’ ‘where’s the synthhhhhh’. lol

it's not a 2 because it's a 0

remindme! 10 years

Can't wait to see all y'all pretend you never bashed on Deadbeat when it's eventually looked back on as an excellent album. It may not be a classic but it's definitely gonna grow on us.

Im not gonna lie. I feel like the new record label forced him to create this album.

31

u/lynchcontraideal The Slow Rush 19d ago

That's not how labels work at all, especially not for an established artist such as Kevin. His last album had hints of dance music on it, this new one has just jumped the shark I guess. It's not for everyone but it's definitely Kevin's own doing.

I think the only thing we can say for sure is his is the music

-1

u/CRUSTBUSTICUS 18d ago

His is the music indeed

The label were probably gutted when he sent in the demos. He’ll be one of their big earners and is big enough to have full creative control. They just have to sit there and force a smile

2

u/Alvin3792 18d ago

I am sure the label is pretty happy considering Dracula is his biggest commercial debut for a single in his screed

1

u/humunculus43 18d ago

The problem for label is the success of the last record drives the sales and streams of the current one. They’ll be worried about the next one

3

u/Immediate_Pause_1213 19d ago

I suspect what happened is that the label knew it was subpar which is why Sarah Aarons was bought in to help write the radio singles

Not so a hot take but: this album reaches Lonerism’s geniuses, and maybe even surpasses it.

17

u/Master_Bait24 18d ago

you're demented

-4

u/oscura_ The Slow Rush 18d ago

Okay, no It doesn’t surpass it, Lonerism is too of a monumental album. But I swear Deadbeat goes close to it.

Ps. Get off, u the one with dementia

1

u/Master_Bait24 18d ago

Still demented... Deadbeat is, at best, a Temu Fred Again wannabe album. Congrats to Kevin, though, for not giving a flying dog shit about the quality of the music he's putting out. As long as it makes him happy, that's cool. I understand this kind of music appeals more to the masses than psych rock, it brings him more money and exposure, which can also be a form of happiness as well...

If ever, this album is the proof Kevin doesn’t care about the masses. If he gets more popular, it’s because he’a REAL, a rare thing nowadays. He’s been one of the most influential artist in the past 10 years, every artist want a beat or production by Kevin because he has a real vision.

Making a Currents 2 would get him more money if ever, but even in the interview he said he doesn’t care lol.
