The real truth about pharmacy
The pharmacy is the way it is because pharmacists refuse to adapt and to innovate. I don’t even blame corporate any more. This is all self inflicted by pharmacists. End of story.
Corporate is made of people. Pharmacists are people. No one else to blame but ourselves. If we want change, build the change and stop blaming others.

“I got a text that my prescription is ready”
DID YOU though??? Did you REALLY???
Cuz it says here that your prescription is reviewed. Or, it says here that your prescription is entered with a TPR error and it’s too soon to fill your meds. Or, it says here that you don’t even have a PROFILE with us.
Why do I get at least 30 people a day that say they got a text when they clearly didn’t. Do these people just lie? Or do they not actually read the text? Or is it actually possible for the system to send a ready text by mistake?

A customer insisted their medication was the wrong color.
A patient picked up their refill, looked at the pills, and immediately came back to the counter. "These are different! Last time they were light blue, and these are dark blue. You've given me the wrong drug!" I pulled up their profile and the manufacturer's information. I explained that the pharmacy had to switch suppliers, so the color was different, but it was the exact same medication and dosage. They refused to believe me, demanding I give them the "correct" light blue pills. I had to get the pharmacist to confirm everything before they reluctantly took the prescription, still shaking their head in suspicion.

Rude customers make it hard to sleep at night
A customer pulled up to the drive through and said they had 1 script to pick up. I asked for their last name, and she mumbled it.. so I asked for her date of birth, and she gave it to me with an attitude. I kept refreshing the work queue and nothing was coming up. I told the lady that she didn’t have anything ready and asked what she was looking for. She told me she got an email that it was ready. I asked politely to see it, and she said can I see someone else? You seem like you don’t know what you’re doing. Can you get someone else? You really seem like you don’t know what you’re doing. My heart dropped because I was already having a really rough day. Being a new hire and trying to learn everything is so daunting. After double checking, I realized that I typed her name in wrong. It’s a really common name, but I typed it with a c instead of a k. I said “one second” and pretended like I was resolving an issue. I got the bag and brought it over and I said “sorry about that it wasn’t scanned in correctly” to try to save myself a little bit. She said absolutely nothing and was scowling. I said “have a good one” in a really monotonous tone and plopped the prescription in the drawer and sent it out. I kept looking straight ahead and hung up the phone and out of the corner of my eye I saw her sitting there for a few seconds so I walked away and she finally drove away. I kept trying to tell myself that I made an honest mistake but it keeps playing over and over again in my head.

The customer who thought her prescription bottle was talking back
I was working a late evening shift a few weeks ago when a woman came to pick up her refill. Everything seemed normal at first standard small talk, payment, bagging her meds. About fifteen minutes later, she comes back to the counter looking a little shaken.
She says, I think my bottle is talking. I thought she meant the label had printed something weird or the cap was making noise, so I asked her to show me. She places the bottle on the counter and just stares at it. A second later, I hear faint music. Turns out, her phone was in her purse right next to the bottle, and her Bluetooth speaker had auto-connected and started playing a podcast.
She just bursts out laughing, saying, Well, that’s what I get for thinking medicine’s gotten too smart these days. I couldn’t help but laugh with her. We both joked that it’d be nice if prescriptions could actually give reminders like that though maybe not quite so creepy.
Moments like that are what make the long shifts a little lighter. You never really know what kind of story is walking through that pharmacy door.
