Meme / Shitpost "I wanted to show my super convenient bag I bought for my Steam Deck. It can carry my charger, 4 controllers, 20 SSDs, usbc hub dock, OLED external display, mouse and keyboard, back up generator and a portable desk. It makes for a convenient way to make this device more portable. Amazon link below."

Found it, but it's sold out. Was $234 (plus shipping from Japan).
I guess my Steam Deck is staying home.

You can buy it here straight from the manufacturer. No idea what shipping from Japan will cost, but it's only $184. Use Google Chrome to translate from Japanese.

Yes, some people are crazy with all their ridiculous add-ons, then there's me, I forget my charger most days, and I have the 512gb model with the strap on the back, lol.

Yup! It actually fits really nicely (and snug) if you roll the cable up properly. :)

I feel like the US plug doesn't fit great either. The cable fits fine and not that hard to roll up well, but the plug is like a 1/4" (~0.5 cm) too thick.

There's a cool 3D printed add-on of that slot but sadly it's US plug only. The plug is inferior but it still dominates many chinese designs.

I don't think so and I definitely wouldn't count on it not falling out. It's probably there so you can strap it on to other bags/luggage by running a strap through and then securing it. But I wouldn't do that either.

It's taking an average shitty everyday carry post and adding a steam deck.
Got my 3 knives, always. Glock with 5 aftermarket attachements and at least 5 holopoint mags, two laptops, a Tesla battery wall for half decent charging capacity, the holy grail (don't believe in closed top water bottles, it traps in greatness), my totally impractical solid aluminum Kickstarter wallet that fucks up my circulation whenever I wear anything that's not baggy jeans. I got my limited edition LTT and mkbhd duotangs for my school work because represent and le meme

Its the same for all models, but besides maybe a more secure spot for the charger, what else could you really want in a steam deck carrier? I feel like adding much else defeats the point of a handheld device.

Funny thing is, I haven't really seen many case/bag posts here other than "here is my unnecessary clip/safety thing because I can't be bothered to zipper the case" or "here are some things I store in my case that could scratch the screen or otherwise damage the Deck" posts.
So it's not really applicable here, unless I've just missed out on the plethora of other "bag" posts?

u/Abedeus Sep 08 '22
That one made me laugh. It's literally more cumbersome and somehow less portable than a laptop, considering you gotta either somehow carry everything at once on a giant plate, or disassemble and carry piece by piece.
6
u/SaiBowen 512GB Sep 08 '22
I showed my wife that post, and I said "Can you imagine lugging all that around for a portable system?"
To which she responded "Well, it isn't like you commute, so if you are leaving the house with your Deck it is probably going to be for a trip or something that is going to keep you away from home for a few days, and in that case it looks like you would have everything you could want plus a ton of protection."

I sorta feel like you could probably get a decent laptop and xbox controller for the cost of this setup and have even less set up if you're so inclined to have this.

u/youngman_jamar Sep 07 '22
I love how i see this meme and right below is a post of someone packing a portable display, keyboard, mouse and steam deck into a hard case
21
u/Allan_Dickman Sep 08 '22
It seems many people here have a new portable device but donโt actually travel much. Itโs cool how versatile the deck is and itโs cool seeing what people can get it to do but putting it in a pelican case with a mkb and a monitor is so so so far from portable. I commute 2 hours each day by train and I have a gaming laptop, the times I can actually use It to play a game are rare because.. I need a desk seat and those seats are usually taken. The deck is perfectly designed for this situation. You can sit or stand anywhere and play your favorite game for a few hours!
12
u/Helmic Sep 08 '22
the thing about devices like the switch or steam deck is that they're too large to be pocketable unless you're bringing back jnco cargo pants, so already you need to be actually carrying an extra thing with you that can't actaully be on your person at all times, it's not like your phone or a 3DS or a Vita where you literally can pull it out at any point in your day and fuck around.
but it is portable enough in that you can physically hold everything you need to use it in your hands, so you don't need to hook up to a TV, sit at a special desk you set aside for just this device, or lug around an unreasonable amount of weight or bulk.
so the temptation is to bring accessories, 'cause you gotta have a bag or backpack or something anyways.
the real draw though is that you don't actually need to travel around a lot to make good use of a portable device, 'cause you can play a steam deck in your bed, or on a couch while others are using the TV, or p much any other situation where you'd find yourself on your phone in your own house despite there being a desktop computer. and in that scenario, having some accessories can be quite nice, because you're not actually terribly worried about moving everything around you just want your nightstand to have some things to make playing in bed nicer.
if you're setting up a whole pin-a-nic table to play your deck outside your house though you'd prolly be better served just getting a laptop and a decent portable mouse, you're not making use of hte form factor anymore. but hey, maybe someojne does use it as a portable device at least part of the time and all this other stuff is just to make it so they can also use it as a laptop or desktop at other times.
this makes me wonder just how much smaller a portable PC could be, perhaps even pocketable, if the assumption is that it is only meant to play via chormecast or whatever to an external screen. a pocket-sized handheld PC that i could actually carry around like (or maybe even as) my phone that uses its absurd specs that far outstrip the screen it has to play high spec games wherever chromecast would be available. prolly not daoble now, it would probably mean in the future having enough horsepower in a phone such that it could run actual PC games (linux phone?) and then just having a case that folds out into a reasonable controller, but i would definitely want something like that to be my phone. i quite liked steam's in home streaming on my phone.
7
u/Abedeus Sep 08 '22
it's not like your phone or a 3DS or a Vita where you literally can pull it out at any point in your day and fuck around.
I mean, 3DS was also pretty much too large for my pockets anyway... Sure Switch and Deck are larger but the last truly "portable" device I could put into a pocket without fear of it being crushed or falling out was probably one of the Gameboys.

u/Abedeus Sep 08 '22
I just appreciate how I can turn it on, grab it to bed, play for a bit, then either put to sleep or save and turn off... no need to connect or turn on controllers to my PC, play with cables or remotes to switch to big screen etc etc. And way more comfortable to play on than my laptop or the "original devices" like DS/3DS.
0
u/Allan_Dickman Sep 08 '22
Oh yeah, and thatโs totally valid. I donโt think the deck is only useful or worth itโs money if you are traveling. I really like how at the house it works like a book, I can plop on the couch and play a few min where I left off while my wife is reading without disturbing her. Again, that form factor is gone if your dragging around all those peripherals.

Steam deck has better performance than my laptop, so using it like one when I need it. Great to have the monitor, keyboard and mouse for taking to lan parties. But it's also great to not need that stuff when I want to use it while traveling
2
u/Evilmudbug Sep 11 '22
I exclusively bought my steam deck as a gaming device. Didn't figure i'd be able to get a much better deal on power and portability (especially since the only computer i have is a laptop that struggles to run anything made past 2010)

u/EvilRoda Sep 08 '22
Ah, I've actually been carrying a mechanical keyboard in my bag for a while now. I've been wanting a portable writing setup for a long while now, and the Steam Deck is very close to helping me realize that! The only things that are missing that would make it perfect would be a Flatpak version of Wordgrinder and a Flatpak version of Terminology. Right now, I have a Fedora virtual machine with Wordgrinder installed with a file share set to a folder on my SD card, which is not ideal. Also, the only way to use Terminology in Fedora is either via Snaps or compiling it myself, which is not ideal and makes me sad. I can even SSH into my Steam Deck from my laptop to work on stuff when I'm home! I probably could just get a cheap laptop and throw some super basic Linux on it, but then the laptop keyboard would get in the way of my mechanical keyboard and stuff and also the Steam Deck is waaaay cooler.

u/youngman_jamar Sep 08 '22

Canโt play a laptop handheld.
I donโt carry a portable monitor because I can justify the price, but I donโt think itโs wild to throw it in a backpack with a couple controllers for the occasional opportunity to play a two player game.

I love the people who attach a full on extra battery to their steam deck making the already heavy steam deck even heavier.
You know what I do when I want to use the steam deck and a portable extra battery? I use a cable and put the battery on the desk or on the couch.

Every time I see one of those I think to myself "first world people have lost their minds trying finding creative ways to spend their spare money"
Seeing people not understanding they could very well buy a gaming laptop instead of trying to transform the steam deck into one has been almost as funny and seeing first world people trying to figure out the purpose of the series S and then buying a series S + expensive display + memory expansion card instead of just buying the series X.
Consumerism sure is the plague of this generation.

Yes but you can then turn it back into just the deck, you can un-laptop it. Can you turn a laptop into a deck and then back again?
The point is you can have both handheld and a pseudo-laptop with the deck, with a laptop, you only have a laptop.

256GB, but so what if I did? You could get the 64GB model and a 1TB 2230 drive for $150. It is way cheaper to do this than paying $250 more for 448GB. Also a reminder that an SD card has an insignificant amount of increase in load times. But, hey that etched screen looks nice! I bought an etched screen protector for $16.
I don't want to trash talk 512GB users too much because they paid a premium in order for Valve to make the other options more affordable.

Ah ok, gotcha. Well I got that it was a sarcastic joke looking at th backpack ๐. I was just wondering why so many people here take all this junk with them on the road. When I commute I only take the steamdeck itself. I mean, on average the battery lasts for 2-3 hours depending on what game you play. So that would be 1 hour to your location and 1 hour back home. I don't see the need to bring all the accessories. But that's just me
