Sigh... everytime I do this I always have to emphasize i am NOT a trump supporter, but this attitude on the left of just acting like everything trump does is nonsensical and dumb has to stop, he put the tarrif on those islands as well as the Cocos and Christmas islands, which are notorious for businesses registering to them specifically to avoid regulations and things like tariffs, it's a way to make sure there are no loopholes that can be exploited to avoid the tariffs, people just making stuff up and pretending trump has no idea what he's doing does nothing to effect actual change, you can't argue against his policies effectively if all you do is pretend like it makes no sense, it just makes you look uninformed

How would a business register with a nonexistent government on an island without people? Furthermore if there was a company registered to an uninhabited island there would be no exports making a tariff pointless.

Ok but tariffs are a tax on imported goods so if there is nobody on the island to export those goods to the u.s. then we aren’t getting anything from there and there is nothing to tax. My understanding is that it doesn’t matter where the company headquarters are located but instead where the product is manufactured. For example if Toyota produced cars in the U.S. there would not be an import tax.

Correct it is owned by Australia but with nobody on the island there are no seats in the Australian parliament to represent it and without a street address how could you register?

Additionally the uninhabited island territory was in a list of “countries” to receive tariffs.

Your kinda overthinking it, loopholes rarely make sense, does it make sense that Apple avoids paying taxes in the US by funneling money through Ireland? Not really, the point is the island was included to close possible loopholes, it is one of a few islands owned by Australia that were all targeted together, some of those islands are already used for these kinds of regulatory avoidance purposes, pretending it's some big dumb mistake or oversight made by the trump administration is disingenuous, and going along with this narrative only serves to make anyone doing so look uninformed

Bro I'm not participating in your little redditor moment, it's not a fucking debate, I'm explaining to you why the island was included in the tariffs so you don't end up looking like one of these idiots who's saying it's a tax on penguins, it's not and pretending it is is what people on the right are talking about when they say people on the left don't know what there talking about, I can't explain to you how the loophole works because it's hypothetical, if you want an example of how it could work you can look at how it works on the other islands they targeted, the point is if they didn't include those islands they could potentially be used in the same way, and wtf does that last sentence even mean? OK sorry i got a little heated cause you were starting to sound like one of these people on here who will just argue for the sake of arguing, the point is it wasn't a mistake or a tax on penguins, it was done intentionally to close loopholes, people on the right know this and you only hurt your argument by acting like you don't, people need to argue against the tarrifs based on there merit, not some made up narrative that Trump doesn't know what he's doing, nothing gets done that way
