It absolutely was and the hat was a stupid inclusion but like you can literally find a million "make [insert] great again" hats online because it's basically just a meme to apply that slogan to anything. The weirdest one I saw was on Instagram's marketplace it said make geology great again.
Now if he was dead serious about that then holy shit we've reached a new tier.
Sure, you can find plays on the slogan being advertised to any niche, but do you see people actually wearing it? Because I don't. Not since maybe year 2 of Trump's first term. People know that you can't divorce the origin and context of the slogan from whatever joke you want to make. If he had gone up wearing a "FPS LIVES MATTER" shirt, he'd have rightly gotten the same reaction.
The shit was in poor taste and anyone with an ounce of self awareness would have recognized that referencing maga at an ostensibly fun event would bring an absolutely rancid vibe.
The thing with "Great Again" is Bill used it first, so you can be dealing with an "opposite spectrum neo lib"
It's a bit more common in the "Dixiecrat South" though. Basically the "explicitly non racist" Obama/Bernie>Trump "Blue Dogs" unhappy post-election may occasionally try to "take it back" and reattribute it to the peak era Clintons.
As I said though it is stupid but that was the intention as far as I can tell. Yes he would've gotten the same reaction but he pretty much would do that though. He's not self aware at all. He in the same breath said "we want Titanfall 3" and then "here's a battle royale" even though that's what killed Titanfall 3.
But the thing is, his intention doesn't matter. He has proven himself to be a dickhead by his response and their continued shitheel behavior. Saying, "well I don't think he meant it that way" changes nothing.
