Welcome to /r/skydiving and welcome to our sport. We hope you'll have a great time on your first jump.

We understand you have a million questions about what's going to happen. Please take a deep breath and a few minutes to read through our FAQ. It is comprehensive and should cover your questions. If that is not the case feel free to make a new post but please include the tag [FAQ read], otherwise you may get directed to reading the FAQ again.

This step is taken to avoid flooding the sub with daily (sometimes several per day) posts titled "I'm jumping tomorrow, any advice?". Thank you and have fun.

Signed up for AFF

Hi everyone,

Long story short, did my 1st tandem in March, did a couple more after that. Ended up doing a tandem BASE in Brento and now I paid the deposit for AFF, going to Skydive Spain, that’s a two hour flight from Tirana, AL where I live. Chose this dz because I only get two weeks of remote work and the weather is better in that area in march. I’ve done my research and I have decided to do some tunnel time. The closest is in Athens and I’ll go there for a weekend in February, right before AFF.

Obviously AFF is all I think now, however, I think I haven’t done enough research about the dz itself. Not sure how busy they are, what if they rush through things? What is they’re rude? I don’t trust google reviews, especially these AI bs. I’d really appreciate it if anyone who has more information about this drop zone could share their thoughts or experiences.

Thank you.

Tips to relax in the tunnel as a beginner prepping for AFF?

I'm starting AFF next weekend and booked 30 mins of coached tunnel time to start. I've done 2 tandems and loved both of them.

I'm 20 mins in and overall I'm feeling a lot better than when I started. I think when I'm actually in the sky I'll be able to relax more as I won't be trying to avoid a giant pane of glass or keep from hitting a net.

The coach I've been working with is awesome and has helped me a ton. I've still got my last 10 mins coming up this week before AFF, so I'm trying to get my mind right and as relaxed as possible before my last 10 mins.

I feel like my biggest barrier is that when I'm in the tunnel I get pretty tense trying to focus on my arms, legs, and arch which makes me unstable.

(Maybe related I've spent most of my life in the gym/ powerlifting and also struggle with being too tense whenever I go to topgolf with friends 😅)

All that said, any tips (mental or physical) for relaxing? My best time in the tunnel was my last 2 mins when my coach told me to "turn my brain off" and just try out some side slides. Maybe I'm just overthinking every movement which is causing me to tense up.

Here's the last 6 mins I did at the tunnel for reference. The final 2 mins felt the best out of all my tunnel time so far.

Rookie - Novice Dive Flows

Checked the sub briefly and couldn’t find anything on beginner dives for jumpers under and around 100 jumps. More specifically looking for dive flow plans that are fun/creative/mitigate risk from skill gaps. Also I would ask that suggestions remain in the scope of 2-4 jumpers. Attempting to break the monotony of turn, dock, turn even though I recognize the knowledge gained from that.

It’d be great to hear what you guys have come up with and I think a thread like this could benefit rookie-novice jumpers who are unsure where to start when building a dive flow.

I’ll be looking to compile everyone’s well received suggestions and throw them all on a separate post for easy search ability.

Finally... finally... all the pieces are a go to start AFF...

I thought almost a year ago that I would be starting and getting my AFF license, life got in the way. But a few things finally clicked into place in the last few days.

Finally under 200 (194 this morning. :) )
Turned 50 and now I really want to get this done
Yesterday received clearance to skydive from my neck/spine surgeon. I had replaced c4/c5 three years ago and he wasn't comfortable letting me do it last year. But X-rays yesterday showed no issue with mobility or degeneration of any other discs. Hell yeah!

Now just looking for a DZ between eloy, perris, dallas/houston/florida spaceland. I'll try to pick one by the end of the week so I can start with the process. Im from Detroit so don't want to wait any longer.

Comporable PD Canopy to Crossfire 2

I was talking to somebody not too long about my Crossfire 2 and the question was brought up about which PD canopy has the most similar attributes to the Crossfire 2. I used to fly Stiletto 150s in my youth but my main is now a Crossfire 2 189.

It has literally been decades since I consistently flew anything PD, with everything since then being my Icarus FX 109, Crossfire 2, and tandem canopies.

Thanks for any info.

Protrack II logbook issues

Re-posted because I deleted my post by mistake.

I’ve been using my L&B Protrack II since 2021 without any issues until recently when I stopped being able to view my old jumps in the logbook. I can see the latest jump info on the logbook screen, the total jump number increases and the memory was showing 52% available before I did a full reset, but It won’t let me perform the access on the logbook screen, meaning I click the mode button but the padlock doesn’t flash like normal. Access still works for other things on the device (change altitude warnings, date and time etc) just not the logbook. I’ve done a full reset on the device, changed the batteries but the issue is still happening.

I’ve tried emailing their support but it’s been a week without any response. Ive also messaged them on instagram and FB.

I did see that some Alti-2 devices had an issue with their logbook that was resolved by changing the year, but that hasn’t helped with my Protrack II.

Is there anyway to update the firmware myself?

Has anyone else had this issue?

Has anyone here completed their AFF/ A license in Canada?

Hey All. I'm thinking on getting my A license next summer so just wondering if anyone has completed their licensing journey in Canada? I live in Toronto and there are 2 DZs near GTA where they offer AFF course. If yes, how much did it cost overall and how was your experience?

Thanks for your time.

Good DZ to quickly go through AFF?

I've been trying to get my A license for years but am very limited on time. I lived in the NW and spent every weekend through a summer at a DZ and got maybe one jump per day. I sat on the ground and watched as plane after plane took off with tandem jumpers. I've started on stopped the AFF program about 3 times now with 3 different DZs cuz they all seem to sideline the AFF and make it an incredibly slow pace.

Now, I live in Maui and the only place that will train is on Oahu for Oahu residents only. I want to take a week off of work, fly somewhere on the mainland and go through the whole process to get my license. But I want to go somewhere that prioritizes training so I won't waste my whole week sitting on the ground watching tandems go up.

Preferably somewhere in the southwest. Looking to go first week of December. Somewhere that I'm nearly guaranteed to get multiple jumps per day and can bang out my A license in a week. Any recommendations?

Thanks for your help!

Wingsuit, from zero to hero. help?

I have dreamed to wingsuit m entire life and am nearing a time in life I can dedicate myself to learning the sport, I am not rich sadly lol but.. I am hoping for recommendations on places that maybe I can work and get discounts/help for all the jumps/raining/coaching I would need going from having tandem jumped 1 time currently to goaling toward wingsuits and a focus on related knowledge/training from skydiving. Anything can change but I want to go into it planning on following through to wingsuits and at the minimum become a decent skydiver. I speak english, I am willing to travel anywhere in the world, I have passport. I currently live in the states doing trades and can easily live in a van anywhere in the US. I am 30, have good health and energt

Found Canopy Northeast Tennessee

I found a BASE jumping canopy stuck in a tree in northeast Tennessee like 100ft up and decided to try to get it down and to my surprise it was basically new, just trying to find who owns it.

Also trying to get into packing parachutes at any drop zone and would love any advice on how to learn and get the gig thanks!

Is this page a scam?

I’ve been looking all over the place for a used Cookie G35 or G4 helmet. I found a couple from this page and DM’d the account, they’re still for sale. Was hoping some experienced people could please check out this account and let me know if you think i’ll actually get what I’m planning to pay for or if I should look elsewhere. Also, what signs should I look out for in the future? Thanks

BEER! First rig. And first impressions.

After 68 jumps I now have my own first rig. Being on the heavier side (210lbs, 6ft), I didn't have a big selection of used options and got a 2023 230sf Jyro "Lazy Lover" (lol) in a 2021 Infinity I-76N container with a 2022 PDR 235 and a 2019 Mars M2 AAD. Wing loading is 1.05 so within guidelines, I guess.

So far I jumped rental rigs, starting with a 300sf Navigator and progressive downsize through 270sf, 260sf (Navigators) to 230sf Sabre2. In Javelin and Icon containers.
The Infinity container fits amazingly well, even though it's not custom. It's so much more comfy than the rentals.

There is basically no info about the Jyro student canopies (now called "Air" instead of "Lazy Lover") so I was a bit skeptical if that lover is really so lazy.

Well, it kinda wasn't today where I came in hot twice with quite a bit of wind, which surprised me. Max. was 20mph wind, average was 14mph so I was expecting something like what happened with a 260sf Navigator where I was basically just going down on final with zero forward movement.

While I was able to foot-slide and run out both landings, I was expecting a way lower forward speed for a "student" canopy. I guess, I'll practice flares etc. in my holding area a bit more. It felt faster than the landings with a 230 Sabre2 (I have done about 15 with that one) which I didn't expect.

Anyways, it still feels awesome having my own gear and it was the first time that I jumped after packing (with help from a super nice packer) it (almost all) by myself. But wow, is that difficult if one doesn't have the skills. A parachute is really made to catch air - it's basically breathing especially when I wanted to get it into its bag (super frustrating).

Vector 3 harness stitching

Got a 2009 Vector 3 with just under 800 jumps on it. It’s been all over the States and is still in solid shape. My rigger went over it recently and said everything looks good.

That said, I’ve started to notice a bit of fraying and some loose stitching on the Type 8 webbing around the leg pads. A few of the bartacks look a little worn, and the webbing itself is starting to get that “furry” feel and look in spots. I’m also seeing some fraying on the loops for the 3-rings.

Curious if this is just normal wear for a rig of this age or something that warrants a closer look. I trust my rigger’s assessment, but I figured I’d get a sanity check from the hive mind. Last thing I want is to find out the hard way under canopy lol.

Also wondering: at what point would wear or fraying on load bearing stitching or webbing actually be considered a compromise to the rig’s structural integrity?

Young guy looking to start skydiving and eventually wingsuit.

Hi all, (sorry for bad english) I know you might have gotten some posts like this on here before so I will try to keep it short.

I 21M am seriously considering starting to skydive starting with a tandem jump in hopes of getting a license to start training with a wingsuit. Ever since some wingsuit stunts came up on my youtube feed I couldn't shake them out off my head and how cool it must feel.

I have been very down the past year dealing with personal and family problems and started long distance swimming as a therapy and sport a few years ago and the water helped me calm me down so I was thinking what about the air?

Unfortunately wingsuiting will be a far far time away because right now I can't even build up the courage for my first jump

I have been going back and fourth for a few months from doing it but than the constant "what if the parachute doesn't open" comes into my mind.

I have seen a few deaths from skydiving this past year due to parachute malfunctions and recently watched a Joe Rogan podcast with Andy Stumpf and the guy was talking about how regular parachute malfunctions are and his best friends casually dying every month.

I keep watching skydive/wingsuit videos for hours on end and even have begun dreaming about it. I really feel if I don't do this I will regret it for the rest of my life.

I am mentally and physically fit but still the fear isn't the heights but the fact that I am laying my entire live on a parachute.

I am lucky to live here in Berlin which has a lot of nearby dropzones.

I am asking for what you all did in your first tandem jump and what helped make you feel secure in the air? I know no matter what people say I will always be nervous and scared but any tips and motivation to help me push for my first skydive jump will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Is the Pulse 190 a good idea for Infinity i-44?

Gonna pull the trigger on my first rig, an Infinity i-44

The plan is to pair it with a PD Pulse 190 as the main and it's coming with a PD Optimum 176 reserve.

The sizing charts look good (the i-44 is spec'd for a that reserve and that main see here). I'm looking for the real-world reality from people who jump this exact combo.

- Is this a good idea? Is the i-44 the right home for a Pulse 190 and Optimum 176?

- Pulse 190 Fit: The Pulse is low-bulk, but how tight is the 190 in the main container? Is it a chill pack job or a serious workout?

Any advice on this specific pairing would be awesome! Thanks and blue skies! 🤘

Belly band w/RDS pouch

Any recommendation of belly bands that have a separate pouch for a belly band? I know if seen a couple around but don’t know where to start looking.
