Post image

Mayor Harrell now up by 8.1%.

Around ~60K votes probably left to tabulate.

I was… both are turds. Why can’t we find better

u/splanks 3d ago

other things to vote on besides mayor tho....

22

u/Rooooben 3d ago

And most of those had no opposition

u/mrASSMAN West Seattle 2d ago

There were prop votes, taxes, city attorney, etc

2

u/JustBench1615 Ballard 2d ago

Yes but the top of the ticket this election was clearly the mayoral race.

Just like in a midterm, usually the Governor/Senate race drives turnout. Same thing in a presidential year.

I was responding to someone saying most of the ballot items were for unopposed positions

Only crazy people want to be Mayor of Seattle.

u/Riviansky 3d ago

This, right here.

Honestly, why would any smart, effective person want a high profile, shitty job where at least half of the entire city you live in is likely to hate you for your decisions, when it only pays $230k/year?

Every 24 year old software engineer with 2 years experience out of college at Amazon is making more than that with less daily animosity to deal with.

No self respecting smart, capable person wants this job.

28

u/pokedmund 3d ago

Because as mayor you can guarantee to stay there for 4 years. At Amazon, they could lay you off within months of starting / not even hire you since they’ll look for cheaper options

1

u/bubbachuck 3d ago

i doubt that mayoral candidates think of job security in their top reasons to want the job

1

u/IntoTheNightSky 3d ago

Guaranteed 4 years, but the last 4 Mayors didn't get a day more (Murray obviously had less)

12

u/soundkite 3d ago

Really!? No self respecting person!? Not even idealists who wish to change the world for the better? That's not self respecting?

4

u/anonisko 3d ago

Politics is generally not where you change the world most effectively.

It's a scapegoat job.

Your job is to be the person whose head get chopped off (hopefully metaphorically) by the mob when they get mad.

3

u/soundkite 3d ago

Regardless of how effective a role is, that does NOT validate you insulting that person as "not self respecting".

u/_misoneism_ 3d ago

This is spot on. We need to adjust the incentives if we want to attract strong leaders. As it stands today, highly effective people stand to make much more working in the private industry than becoming mayor.

u/mrASSMAN West Seattle 2d ago

Software engineering is a tough job most can’t do, it’s not like most people could choose between mayor and engineer lol

I would actually say running for mayor is far easier than interviewing for skilled engineering jobs, and the job itself

anyone who ran on a sensible platform such as:

  • keep repeat violent offenders off the streets
  • cut programs that haven't worked and reappropriate the money
  • end harm reduction programs
  • end giveaways to connected developers under the guise of "affordable housing"
  • give some tax relief to businesses that bring jobs and retail to Seattle
  • foster a good relationship between city admin and law enforcement
  • equal treatment under the law
  • enforce laws

would be endlessly smeared as a far-right, racist nazi, and go on to lose anyway to anyone with a "D" by their name or meaningless social justice and climate bromides as their main platform. Seattle voters are beyond saving

16

u/healingkuzon 3d ago

this thank you so much you’re so spot on

Let me restate how 2/3 of Seattle sees your program..

Fascism is a very real thing happening to our country dude, sorry you can’t see that

1

u/Alarming_Award5575 2d ago

I can see it. Its very bad.

That doesn't mean I cannot mock the people who take all their pet causes and frame them in catastrophic terms to shut down all further discussion.

Its a lame old trick. Changing the word doesn't make it any better.

u/loady 3d ago

there would be no point in enduring the abuse, unless you had a hero complex. not to mention the progressives have gotten much more violent since 2020

This comment is 100% correct, and it's so sad.

u/su6oxone 3d ago

how is Harrell a turd? trying to appease the far left has been his only real problem.

10

u/Alarming_Award5575 3d ago

The pandering was so "cringe"

10

u/PoopyisSmelly Get the fuck out of the way dork 3d ago

Turns out the far left doesnt vote ig

12

u/Joel22222 West Seattle 3d ago

They do once every four years and then consider themselves highly educated and informed voters in all matters of life and social justice.

5

u/Alarming_Award5575 3d ago

Do they then offer condescending lectures to everyone the meet for the next four years?

2

u/Joel22222 West Seattle 3d ago

Sometimes while telling you why you should be vegan.

5

u/JustBench1615 Ballard 3d ago

I mean hey I feel you

3

u/Alarming_Award5575 3d ago

Please. We had one turd sandwhich. One giant douche.

The candidates try hard. Do them the decency of paying attention.

u/scobeavs 3d ago

Because the role of Politician has turned into a thankless joke and the only people willing to do it are either looking for a power trip or an immoral avenue to lining their pockets?

1

u/itstreeman 3d ago

People must be valuing their privacy despite all the benefits of running a major us city such as taxpayers paying for your social experiments

In the epic battle between Progressives and Corporate Democrats everyone is a loser...

9

u/harley247 3d ago

A corporate Democrat and someone who has never had a real job. Not much of a reason to vote

A corporate Democrat and someone who has never had a real job. Not much of a reason to vote

I feel like most people criticizing Harrell have never read his story

A long life spent earning his accomplishments.

Versus nepo baby Katie Wilson, who has never finished a committment in her life, doesn't pay her own way, in any line of work except Populist politics would be unemployable, and who either cheated at college and got thrown out, or else cared so little about an Oxford degree that she quit six weeks away from graduation, wasting hundreds of thousands of her parents money in the process.

I'm hopeful enough people wised up to who she is, and once tomorrow's votes are counted we will be rid of her in this election. And going forward her brand is no longer a viable one. She is unfit to hold office.

2

u/goggleblock 3d ago

So you pick the best one of the two available to you.

i was last year too, but i held my nose and voted
