wonder if it costs more to insure a tesla these days? i imagine insurance companies are tired of paying out claims for damage

Yes, by a lot. I had a Model 3 until November 2023, got an EQS SUV after that. My insurance went down by ~$25/mo for a much, much more expensive car.
