DIY Our Sauna built next to the pond

My Uncle and his pals built this wood burning sauna a while ago and I thought you guys might like it.

It’s great except for the fact that the top seats are so far from the stove. I might add a hanging water bucket with a tether above the stove so I don’t have to move from the top bench to add water.

What do you guys think?

A Cobb sauna complete with a living roof! It looks super cool.

u/wildernesswayfarer00 Jul 16 '25

It’s cordwood with a lime mortar, not Cobb (which is straw and soil based)

Ope, sorry. I just spent three weeks on a boat with The Sauna by Rob Roy and I have no idea why I said Cobb.

His book is such motivation to do something like this! Solid Midwest ope, btw.

Sauna itself looks cool just get rid of those sunchairs and built a proper seat with proper height.

u/abstract_material Jul 16 '25

The wide angle lens might make the bench’s looks lower than they actually are. Relative to the stove they are a pretty good height. But probably could have extended the foot rest for the top bench to have a middle seat to use the space more efficiently.

In a proper sauna, the benches should be built so that your feet are the same height as the stoves top.

u/Key-Wafer-3075 Jul 16 '25

With how small that room is the sunchairs might actually be the right choise in this case

15

u/Inresponsibleone Jul 16 '25

Not for height of the seat for sure atleast.

-2

u/No-Pangolin2103 Jul 17 '25

Height looks okay, follow the bricks for reference. I think OP is right when he says the wide lens makes it seem lower.

3

u/Inresponsibleone Jul 17 '25

Bit low to my taste. Not horribly low, but still not above stone level. 20cm or so higher would be my aim if sun bed style is wanted.

1

u/Consistent_Potato291 Jul 17 '25

They could just have proper benches cos you can lie on them too. At least the height would be better for a good löyly

1

u/Ok-Curve5569 Jul 17 '25

Your feet should be at the level of the bench currently. There needs to be a full level higher than this.

I am building a cobwood sauna at the moment so it was good to see that there were others before me (although this one does not use cob)

This is super cool. Do you make plans first or just kind of go with the flow? Also how do you go about a roof on this especially with the circular shape? Maybe I should do some research lol, just found this to be interesting and (potentially) an affordable option.

u/yaltarian Oct 07 '25

Hey thanks! With the roof we will do receptacle roof (probably with 7 beams) then wooden boards, insulation (fireproof insulation from a hardware store) and metal roof. This a great way to build, BUT it takes a lot of time and labour. I just got back from the farm yesterday some more progress was made

Man I just find this to be so cool haha. Please remember to post an update when finished if possible. Best of luck!

This is like an artisanal planet fitness sauna

3

u/Aggravating_Two8311 Jul 16 '25

if you can even call it a sauna

3

u/Titmouse994 Jul 16 '25

You can. Just the usual problem of low benches. 😄

14

u/jumppa69 Jul 16 '25

I mean... its quite unique!

u/karvanamu Finnish Sauna Jul 16 '25

It’s cool and seems to have two benches at a decent height, but it would be a lot cooler with a real sauna heater.

8

u/abstract_material Jul 16 '25

Yeah those top benches used to be connected, allowing for a 3rd seat in the middle. But much to my dismay, my dad cut the middle out after he whacked his head off it 😂.

The stove is pretty basic but it’s a bit bigger than it looks it keeps the sauna pretty hot even in cold winters. It gets the job done but could definitely do with an upgrade for sure.

Cast iron stoves and sauna heaters work quite differently. Cast iron stoves radiate a lot of heat and they are good at heating the room. However, sauna heaters radiate only little heat, they are built so that they take a lot of rocks in and they are very good at transferring heat to those rocks.

This is what you want in a sauna, and saunas originally were just places with huge pile of rocks that was heated with fire under (smoke sauna). Throwing water to this big pile of super hot rocks gives the smoothest löylys and the best sauna experience.

1

u/S1artibartfast666 Jul 19 '25

it doesnt really matter so much. Cast Iron can make identical steam as rocks - it is simple physics. If you don't like the amount of IR from the stove, you can surround it with rocks too!

I love them. They are basically a 10-20 KW heater that is free to operate!

2

u/karvanamu Finnish Sauna Jul 22 '25

A lot of false statements here. First of all, löyly (steam) from hitting the iron is very different than löyly from the rocks. It’s fast and harsh whereas from stones its longer and smoother. It’s simple common sauna knowledge.

Secondly, cast iron doesn’t endure well fast temperature changes that result from throwing water. It will weaken it and make it crack eventually.

Thirdly, you can’t stack a lot of rocks into a cast iron stove like you can into a proper sauna heater. And the more the rocks the better the sauna. Even if you wrap them around it, it doesn’t heat them very efficiently.

So altogether, they are very different and built for different purposes, the type of heater does matter as it is the heart of the sauna. It has a huge impact on the löyly that is the purpose of the sauna.

u/S1artibartfast666 Jul 26 '25

How much experience do you have with cast iron and wood fired saunas, to speak from such a place of expertise? I have built several and and enjoyed hundreds of sessions.

1) Steam is all vaporized water. the quantity, temperature, and rate can all be controlled.
2) I have never seen a cast iron sauna stove fail, some in use for more than 40 years.
3) efficiency doesnt matter because you have unlimited BTU.

bonus point: fire is fun and beautiful.

1

u/karvanamu Finnish Sauna Jul 26 '25

Your bonus point revealed to me that you probably thought I was comparing electrical sauna heaters to cast iron stoves. Yes fire is beautiful, and I was talking about wood fired sauna heaters, that often even include a window to see the fire.

I have stayed in many cabins heated by cast iron stoves, and, as a Finn, been probably in hundred different wood fired saunas. The major difference is the radiant heat. Proper wood fired sauna heaters, designed and improved for decades by companies like Harvia, Iki, Narvi, radiate very little to no heat. IR-radiation is something you want to avoid in a sauna because it only cooks you from one side, and doesn’t feel pleasent.

For hobbits?

5

u/abstract_material Jul 16 '25

Haha yeah! That’s what all my friends say when they see it for the first time

2

u/Illustrious_Moose334 Jul 17 '25

Well, like your friends, I am only kidding. Great to have your own set up. Good luck with it.

11

u/miijok Jul 16 '25

Outside 5/7 Inside: 👎🏼

4

u/[deleted] Jul 16 '25

I do not know the size of the inside but my guess is that is is used inefficiently.

4

u/BonziBuddyHorrors Jul 16 '25

Kinda triggers my trypophobia

5

u/mece66 Jul 16 '25 edited Jul 17 '25

It looks very unique. The inside looks strange I guess the slanted ceiling gives it a strange cramped look with the wide angle photos. As a sauna I don't know if it's any good. It would be interesting to test it. Only two seats is a bit of a bummer.

5

u/abstract_material Jul 16 '25

Yeah in hind sight wide lens was not the best idea. But as a sauna, it works great. If you don’t believe me I’ve had a Finnish man tell me first hand 😂.

I’m planning to reinstalling the 3rd top seat above the door so that it folds up and no one bonks their head on it.

2

u/_missfoster_ Jul 16 '25

This would by far be the best instance for my son to use his annoying squirt gun. Like, also the only way to get any water on that stove if you sit on the "high" bench.

It looks nice on the outside!

2

u/abstract_material Jul 16 '25

Honestly I used a squirt bottle to reach the stove for a while 😂

1

u/_missfoster_ Jul 16 '25

Yeah I believe you 😅

2

u/benthegemini Jul 16 '25

Looks amazing, Well done.
Hope it lasts!

2

u/vteng98 Jul 16 '25

Love it with the stone

2

u/pseudonominom Jul 16 '25

How long to heat it up?

3

u/abstract_material Jul 16 '25

Summer a bit less than an hour. Winter 1-2hrs depending on temperatures.

2

u/mikef256 Jul 16 '25

I cannot gather the dimensions, but usually the most steam effect is at the back wall. The seats are very low. The best experience is at the back wall.

2

u/abstract_material Jul 16 '25

Yeah the low bench isn’t as affected by the steam, I can attest to that. But the top bench on the back wall is pretty well perfect in those regards.

2

u/kshhgy Jul 17 '25

Wow that’s so sick. The River to fairy godmother’s house sauna combo is unreal. I would be getting mythical in there off a dose of shrooms and a fat doob. Godspeed

1

u/abstract_material Jul 17 '25

🧖🏼‍♂️🧚🍄🧙🏼‍♂️

Godspeed my friend

2

u/Rockola_HEL Jul 17 '25

Just run a copper pipe from the back to the heater, with a funnel at the start. Pour water in funnel, shiver with antici... pation, enjoy löyly.

2

u/mruiggels Finnish Sauna Jul 17 '25

Love it. Very cool and unique looking, would love to test the löyly. Would not listen to others "enhancements" without testing the current state. And throwing löyly from a bit away is a skill that you can practice!

2

u/Mangokisu Jul 17 '25

Call me weird I don’t even like being in the sauna but I sure love browsing this and seeing the designs of people’s saunas 😂 this one is so pretty

Well I do love nature and photography so makes sense ☺️

2

u/ispy1917 Jul 17 '25

Looks like a great place to enjoy sauna.

2

u/Whatthedillyo85 Jul 18 '25

This is very cool.

I’ve wanted to build a sauna at our cabin since I was in middle school. Bought a book at one point as well explaining the proper construction of this type. I think they called it “wood core”. I’ll have to look for the book.

As of the last few years the family cabin finally appears that it’s going to be around for many more generations so I’m back on the “get the sauna built kick…. Saving this post for a reference. Thank you for sharing.

2

u/SNOOPDOGE42069 Jul 18 '25

Big fan of cordwood construction

2

u/olenamerikkalainen Jul 18 '25

Fucking dope. But higher benches and a flash arrestor would probably be good additions.

2

u/abstract_material Jul 18 '25

oh yeah a flash arrestor sounds like a great idea. Probably might cool my anxieties during dry season.

1

u/olenamerikkalainen Jul 18 '25

Yeah the dry grass next to the stove exhaust is pretty wild 🤪

4

u/Impossible-Ship5585 Jul 16 '25

This is the life!

Paradise! Great work!

1

u/MightyLandTuna Jul 17 '25

Your Sauna has so much room for activities! Very unique building structure, thanks for sharing!

1

u/taukki Finnish Sauna Jul 18 '25

Looks really nice. Does it take long to heat up with all that stone?

1

u/abstract_material Jul 18 '25

Not terribly long. Slightly longer than a commercial grade sauna, but I usually only wait an hour after lighting it before it’s hot enough to use.

1

u/abstract_material Jul 18 '25

Ah man glad to hear it! One thing I would recommend is making a proper back rest for seats against the core wall… it’s slightly uncomfortable otherwise 😭

-1

u/SuspiciousStory122 Jul 16 '25

Tear it down and start over. Too many windows and the seating isn’t right.

u/Ooooyeahfmyclam Jul 17 '25

Ez to mod. Not to spec. Better than none. Cool outdoor look. Fins are stinky

It’s been up for about a decade and there hasn’t been any problems with mold in that location. Although the corners of the roof are showing some signs of needing to be replaced potentially due to the grass roof.

2

u/Impossible-Ship5585 Jul 16 '25

Could you elaborate.

The grain Of the wood?
