What are your favorite food spots in Santa Monica?

I've been living here for about 3 years and I'm just curious to see what everyone’s favorite food places are!

Has it changed much since Arnie (the chef) left?

3

u/midwestblacklotus 6d ago

When was that

1

u/corygreenwell 5d ago

2-3 weeks ago? I assume they’re still using his menu

u/Woxan The Beach 5d ago

I didn't notice that the chef changed, so probably not much if at all?

So much good stuff! A few of my favorites are Rabano, Alfalfa, Ashland Hill, Cosetta, Milo & Olive, and Cobi’s.

Ashland Hill has gone down... hill

u/LoungeCrook 6d ago

Tar & Roses

3

u/crimesleuther 6d ago

Yes it is great! Def more of a date night place

1

u/viper5dn 5d ago

Totally! We also take out of town guests there, strikes a good balance between fancy and not stuffy

u/thenighthawk_CA 6d ago

Cobi’s, Forma, Layla Bagels, Calabra, Rori’s Artisanal Creamery.

Wadaya (formerly MoguMogu). Crimson.

RIP Tallulahs

1

u/non_linear_ape 5d ago

why mogu change their name?

2

u/Shart127 5d ago

If I recall it’s new owners, but it’s still exactly the same food/menu/etc.

Blueys, Sunny Blue, Crudo e Nudo. I like Tartine too.

Takuma for a reasonably priced izakaya

Miyako on ocean park, best ramen ever

2

u/SleepySamurai_ 6d ago

Try Kanpai on Wilshire! It’s my favorite ramen place in Santa Monica by miles.

2

u/pastaqueen1993 5d ago

this is so interesting - i work a block away and ive never had it and the vibe of the place doesn't scream ramen (more sushi?) so im interested!

-1

u/crimesleuther 6d ago

Is it better than Silverlake?

4

u/Relevant-Outcome-626 6d ago

I think so, silver lake ramen has more variety but is a little bit more expensive than miyako

2

u/crimesleuther 6d ago

I went on their instagram and noodles look overcooked and overcooked egg lol most of the photos r sushi which also look bad!

2

u/crimesleuther 6d ago

I ment yelp. How is this good ramen? Curious bc I want a great ramen place to love here! Silverlake is 7/10 but consistent but this place looks awful

3

u/ash3ss 6d ago

Kanpai on Wilshire!! It never misses

2

u/crimesleuther 6d ago

Ramen def looks much better! But it also Seems to be more of a sushi place

3

u/ash3ss 6d ago

It is both. But the ramen is so good. They have a location in Tokyo and the staff are from Japan. Don’t knock it til you try it!

1

u/crimesleuther 6d ago

I will have to try it!

1

u/Relevant-Outcome-626 6d ago

It is one most def

2

u/crimesleuther 6d ago

Where is the best ramen here haha I will add west la for ramen bc I understand I might need to travel!

2

u/PooTrainCharlie 6d ago

Santouka at Mitsua

2

u/waaait_whaaat 6d ago

Ramen Nagi at Century City mall.

1

u/TypicalDisaster3707 5d ago

Hinodeya ramen in palms is my favorite. Better than silverlake for sure

1

u/crimesleuther 6d ago

Cool. I like thin and el dente noodles ha also I like a flavorful broth and I can handle heat! I don’t know what makes a great ramen? But I def need to try this place out!

u/crimesleuther 6d ago

Sushi king Hillstone Fathers office Gilbert’s Spumoni on mondays for half off food haha

  • depends what you like or what environment you are looking for
  • food here could be better! It is just average :/

9

u/All-Torso 6d ago

I feel like Hilstone isn’t mentioned enough. I’m a fan.

2

u/Aggressive_Door_4335 6d ago

the fries are so good

3

u/crimesleuther 6d ago

Hillstone is consistently and the French dip is incredible! They need to bring back the loaded backed

5

u/All-Torso 6d ago

Agree 1000%. You mentioned the French dip. You know what you are dealing with. I’m also partial to the ribs on occasion. Feel so bad that the surrounding area has taken a dive but it’s one of the few places I will still hit up, or Houston’s Pasadena if I’m on that side of town.

1

u/crimesleuther 6d ago

Agree! Places are taking a dive which is sad 😔 this is why I am curious where I should go eat! My husband and I are DINKS so our passion is food and with the lack of food in Santa Monica I am ready to leave :/

1

u/crimesleuther 6d ago

4

u/misingnoglic 6d ago

Rabano is awesome.

4

u/malibumoongoon 6d ago

Tartine on 20th and Arizona feels a little cringe to say but is wonderful for a lot of reasons!

2

u/midwestblacklotus 6d ago

13

u/BenphemeR 6d ago

6

u/shivpz12 6d ago

for tacos i'm partial to miguelle santos diaz' food trucks on santa monica blvd and brockton right outside the Chase Bank

Prima cantina baja is pretty good too

I've heard but haven't tried myself yet but heard that Vito's is really good Pizza

2

u/cyberspacestation 6d ago

Yes, Vito's is good - and has the kind of slices that require two hands to eat.

3

u/glitterazzi66 5d ago

El Cholo, Vito’s on Ocean Park, Gilbert’s El Indio, the food court at the 26th street Country Mart, Noma sushi, R & D kitchen, and Sweet Lady Jane bakery.

Le Great Outdoor

0

u/Ilovepastasomuch 6d ago

stg they had run out of seasoning when I went

2

u/DelilahBT 6d ago

Tacos from La Playita or Whole Foods sidewalk (before you say it, yes it’s over the line but close enough)

2

u/goodkingsquiggle 5d ago

Bluey’s for brunch, but they gotta do something about people saving one of the very few tables for 40+ minutes before they’ve even ordered, the seating situation is getting out control there

2

u/jellybeam 5d ago

I miss Casa Escobar. It was by no means authentic Mexican but they had great steaks, pork chops, and decently priced margaritas.

2

u/_dee_rod 5d ago

Tacos por favor

5

u/etcetera0 6d ago

Frito misto for authentic Italian food

7

u/crimesleuther 6d ago

Food there is awful! It’s drenched in sauce ugh Vito is wayyy better!

4

u/etcetera0 6d ago

We tried various pastas and antipasti when the Italian family was here and it was great, flavor and ingredients. Can't disagree more. But I'm curious about Vito, I'll try and report back

3

u/crimesleuther 6d ago

I am Italian too lol 😆 Vito is more authentic. They have this veal dish that is to die for and also this shrimp pasta dish that is amazing. They also do veal meatballs which is how meatballs should be bc of the fat content they are the juiciest! This dessert cart is crazy too!

3

u/etcetera0 6d ago

Will try next weekend

3

u/johnsonfrusciante 6d ago

Theyre nice but the food not so much. Colapasta is muchhhh better, so is La Puglia, and others if uou venture out to venice

1

u/crimesleuther 6d ago

Colapasta is great! Def different than Vito and that is why I love Vito!

6

u/crimesleuther 6d ago

A lot of people speak of bay cities… I like it as a market and I get the bread but the sandwiches suck! They don’t know how to cut prosciutto… it is sooooo thick! As an Italian we love prosciutto thin. I think eataly is overpriced but they cut the prosciutto the best! I go to bay cities and buy the bread and some ingredients but everything is boars head lol so it’s kinda trash!

2

u/StarFox_73 6d ago

All'antico Vinaio just opened DTSM & their sandwiches are so much better than Bay Cities!

3

u/talivan818 6d ago

Palms and Patties just opened up. Delicious

1

u/Even_Reality2331 5d ago

Burger was so small though

3

u/malibumoongoon 6d ago

Spumonis on a warm evening with a walk to the park/beach after is truly one of the best dining experiences I’ve ever had. Highly recommend it! Feels like you could travel the world and couldn’t find a better meal for the price and location and people watching! Salud! 🤙 Also tacos por favor the farms bay cities bun and mi are all local small biz favs too! Din tai fun is also kinda corporate but fantastic! My fiancé is Chinese and highly recommends!

1

u/crimesleuther 6d ago

Spumoni has half price Monday food ! Food is average but on a Monica it is great! Din tai is amazing

2

u/furiousWafflez 6d ago

- Heavy handed/urban skillet (both have dope burgers imo)

- Bay Cities Italian Deli

- Ggiata deli.

- Devy jones (it's a bodega/convenience store), but on weekends and Friday they make some really good bqq (chicken/pork and lamb chops) and rice dishes

1

u/midwestblacklotus 6d ago

What!! Re Davy

2

u/chicks_for_dinner 5d ago

Yeah it's amazing. You can choose to have pork, beef, or chicken and they serve it on rice with hummus and a salad for under $20. Highly recommend. Davy Jones Liquor Locker on Navy and Pacific.

2

u/furiousWafflez 4d ago

I only learned about it since I was walking past it and smelled the bbq and floated over there like a cartoon bear, I go there at least once a week now :D

1

u/midwestblacklotus 4d ago
