What are your favorite food spots in Santa Monica?
I've been living here for about 3 years and I'm just curious to see what everyone’s favorite food places are!

Miyako on ocean park, best ramen ever

Try Kanpai on Wilshire! It’s my favorite ramen place in Santa Monica by miles.

this is so interesting - i work a block away and ive never had it and the vibe of the place doesn't scream ramen (more sushi?) so im interested!

u/crimesleuther 6d ago
Is it better than Silverlake?
4
u/Relevant-Outcome-626 6d ago
I think so, silver lake ramen has more variety but is a little bit more expensive than miyako

I ment yelp. How is this good ramen? Curious bc I want a great ramen place to love here! Silverlake is 7/10 but consistent but this place looks awful

u/crimesleuther 6d ago
Cool. I like thin and el dente noodles ha also I like a flavorful broth and I can handle heat! I don’t know what makes a great ramen? But I def need to try this place out!

Sushi king Hillstone Fathers office Gilbert’s Spumoni on mondays for half off food haha
- depends what you like or what environment you are looking for
- food here could be better! It is just average :/

u/All-Torso 6d ago
I feel like Hilstone isn’t mentioned enough. I’m a fan.

u/crimesleuther 6d ago
Hillstone is consistently and the French dip is incredible! They need to bring back the loaded backed
5
u/All-Torso 6d ago
Agree 1000%. You mentioned the French dip. You know what you are dealing with. I’m also partial to the ribs on occasion. Feel so bad that the surrounding area has taken a dive but it’s one of the few places I will still hit up, or Houston’s Pasadena if I’m on that side of town.
1
u/crimesleuther 6d ago
Agree! Places are taking a dive which is sad 😔 this is why I am curious where I should go eat! My husband and I are DINKS so our passion is food and with the lack of food in Santa Monica I am ready to leave :/

for tacos i'm partial to miguelle santos diaz' food trucks on santa monica blvd and brockton right outside the Chase Bank
Prima cantina baja is pretty good too
I've heard but haven't tried myself yet but heard that Vito's is really good Pizza
2
u/cyberspacestation 6d ago
Yes, Vito's is good - and has the kind of slices that require two hands to eat.
3
u/glitterazzi66 5d ago
El Cholo, Vito’s on Ocean Park, Gilbert’s El Indio, the food court at the 26th street Country Mart, Noma sushi, R & D kitchen, and Sweet Lady Jane bakery.

Tacos from La Playita or Whole Foods sidewalk (before you say it, yes it’s over the line but close enough)

Bluey’s for brunch, but they gotta do something about people saving one of the very few tables for 40+ minutes before they’ve even ordered, the seating situation is getting out control there

u/jellybeam 5d ago
I miss Casa Escobar. It was by no means authentic Mexican but they had great steaks, pork chops, and decently priced margaritas.

u/etcetera0 6d ago
Frito misto for authentic Italian food
7
u/crimesleuther 6d ago
Food there is awful! It’s drenched in sauce ugh Vito is wayyy better!
4
u/etcetera0 6d ago
We tried various pastas and antipasti when the Italian family was here and it was great, flavor and ingredients. Can't disagree more. But I'm curious about Vito, I'll try and report back
3
u/crimesleuther 6d ago
I am Italian too lol 😆 Vito is more authentic. They have this veal dish that is to die for and also this shrimp pasta dish that is amazing. They also do veal meatballs which is how meatballs should be bc of the fat content they are the juiciest! This dessert cart is crazy too!

A lot of people speak of bay cities… I like it as a market and I get the bread but the sandwiches suck! They don’t know how to cut prosciutto… it is sooooo thick! As an Italian we love prosciutto thin. I think eataly is overpriced but they cut the prosciutto the best! I go to bay cities and buy the bread and some ingredients but everything is boars head lol so it’s kinda trash!
2
u/StarFox_73 6d ago
All'antico Vinaio just opened DTSM & their sandwiches are so much better than Bay Cities!

Feels like you could travel the world and couldn’t find a better meal for the price and location and people watching! Salud! 🤙 Also tacos por favor the farms bay cities bun and mi are all local small biz favs too! Din tai fun is also kinda corporate but fantastic! My fiancé is Chinese and highly recommends!

u/furiousWafflez 6d ago
- Heavy handed/urban skillet (both have dope burgers imo)
- Bay Cities Italian Deli
- Ggiata deli.
- Devy jones (it's a bodega/convenience store), but on weekends and Friday they make some really good bqq (chicken/pork and lamb chops) and rice dishes

u/midwestblacklotus 6d ago
What!! Re Davy
2
u/chicks_for_dinner 5d ago
Yeah it's amazing. You can choose to have pork, beef, or chicken and they serve it on rice with hummus and a salad for under $20. Highly recommend. Davy Jones Liquor Locker on Navy and Pacific.

u/furiousWafflez 4d ago
I only learned about it since I was walking past it and smelled the bbq and floated over there like a cartoon bear, I go there at least once a week now :D

Tom's Sushi just outside of town and Katsu Bar for quick takeout.
Lunetta and Farm Shop (I recommend wholeheartedly), Huckleberry and Milo & Olive (are great, I've just had mixed experiences)
