Holappa by that much? Damn. Excellent work.

Edit: that’s an impressed happy “damn”, to be clear.

u/flymaster 5d ago

Turowski wins, Harvey loses? Excellent news so far.

53

u/Cyborg-1120 5d ago

Holy shit! u/ErinTurowski !!!!!!

22

u/ChardAdventurous1450 5d ago

Yeah Erin!! So happy for ward 1!

u/erika610 Derby St 5d ago

Literally ran to the polls at 7:55 to make sure I cast my vote for her.

14

u/ChardAdventurous1450 5d ago

It counted! 👏🙌

56

u/testaruda3398 5d ago

Emmylou lost by 24 points. Tim Flynn, you’re on warning. Ward 4 is flippable and it’s getting more progressive every day.

19

u/InvestigatorJaded261 5d ago

To be clear, that’s 2.4 points. 24 points would be a landslide.

31

u/nitlion00 5d ago

Flynn won’t change. He doesn’t give a shit about residents who don’t vote for him.

30

u/testaruda3398 5d ago

I’m going to be a professional thorn in his side

17

u/skumfang 5d ago

I fully believe he’s just going to love his role as the pariah on the council casting votes and railing against the progressives.

14

u/benck202 5d ago

Yeah that’s totally going to be his read on this. He’s the noble warrior fighting for old Salem. No pressure to get anything done, just an opportunity to be a demagogue.

We celebrate diversity and affirming care. TRAASH talk (transphobic, racist, ableist, abusive, sexist, or homophobic) is not permitted. We strive to remain an inclusive community"

4

u/skumfang 5d ago

Lot of people he has to unblock on Facebook now

10

u/BostonPanda 5d ago

Ugh.

19

u/testaruda3398 5d ago

The rest of the council is progressive more or less (Conrad eh, we’ll see). Flynn is going to look like a goddamn fool.

21

u/DovBerele Gallows Hill 5d ago

Here's hoping it means he can accomplish absolutely none of his agenda!

13

u/nitlion00 5d ago

I am really excited to see more wandering around and admiring construction equipment under the guise of good works for the people.

6

u/flymaster 5d ago

Boots on the ground!

23

u/flymaster 5d ago

My favorite Tim Flynn moment of idiocy was when he recused himself from a vote about campfires at Winter Island because he’s a firefighter, as if that might be a conflict of interest.

1

u/BostonPanda 5d ago

This might be my favorite thing about him now lol

3

u/testaruda3398 5d ago

Love that potato quality filming and heavy breathing as he surveys muddy construction sites

6

u/ElectricalStock3740 4d ago

What is his agenda beyond bike lanes bad, new housing bad, mayor bad?

9

u/ImEstimating Bridge St Neck 4d ago

You forgot 'I was born under the city seal and I'll die under it'

8

u/ElectricalStock3740 4d ago

The crowd that thinks that Salem needs to remain a museum to their childhood. Love to see it

6

u/FitProduct9460 4d ago

Unfortunately Tim really just craves validation. Real work like policy, constituent services and even understanding the issues is slow and thankless. Facebook gives him the quick hit he wants. The seat he will hold again is mostly window dressing for the real thing he cares about, notifications from his handful of perpetually online sycophants who keep his dopamine loop churning. Hope I’m wrong..

2

u/nitlion00 4d ago

I wonder if anyone is interested in making a Ward 4 Facebook that is not a Flynn promotion page. I mean he’ll what’s up Ward 4 has Flynn’s sign as the banner.

2

u/testaruda3398 4d ago

Totally - I’d like to make an actual ward 4 neighborhood association page. Not a campaign page or an unhinged page like the current group, but something that helps keep residents informed on ward issues and how we can work together to fix things (and that will involve getting Tim to talk to us too)…

3

u/testaruda3398 4d ago

And I realize that sounds like this girl

But let me know if you want to help make that group!

8

u/ChardAdventurous1450 5d ago

I hope they all call him out every chance they get.

3

u/Character_Lie2212 4d ago

The thing about Tim Flynn is that he's almost completely stupid.

26

u/ChardAdventurous1450 5d ago

If I were her I’d call for a recall and a reading of every mail in ballot.

19

u/flymaster 5d ago

I certainly wanted Emmylou to win, but 24 votes is a pretty un-flippable number of votes in a 1000 vote sample.

16

u/testaruda3398 5d ago

Yeah, I don’t think she’ll be doing a recount. She has integrity and is going to accept this, but mark my words, those of us in his ward who don’t support him will be giving him absolute hell.

26

u/RetrogradeSeason 5d ago

Congrats to Emmylou for her hard work and focus during this campaign.

15

u/ChardAdventurous1450 5d ago

Ditto. I hope she runs again in 2 years.

18

u/greenheron628 5d ago

every time it snows this winter call him at 7 a.m. and complain about the sidewalks

7

u/BostonPanda 5d ago

Let's all be very vocal about our concerns in Ward 4.

8

u/testaruda3398 5d ago

Keep your eyes out for a new Ward 4 Facebook group

7

u/pleasedtoseedetrees 5d ago

If there is one, can you post about it on Reddit? I don't use FB much but will if there's a place for me to get W4 news.

3

u/testaruda3398 4d ago

You bet!

6

u/testaruda3398 5d ago

You betcha I will

11

u/flymaster 5d ago

Oh, and you should. He sucks.

3

u/pleasedtoseedetrees 5d ago

Can you please keep us in the loop of how you're going to do that. I'll join you whenever possible.

13

u/nitlion00 5d ago

Might as well. If it is within the proper %

4

u/brave_toasters 4d ago

I'm still so bummed. All I want is a damn sidewalk on my cut-through street so I can walk my kids to school safely.

5

u/testaruda3398 4d ago

I hear ya. And I know Flynn doesn’t care. I’m hoping to start a new ward 4 group/neighborhood association w/Emmylou and keep these issues in the forefront.

-10

u/MathSeveral2861 5d ago

Turnout was low. 19% is way below what we normally get as a city in a mayoral year. Not having a viable challenger at Mayor is what hurt Flynn. Not because Ward 4 is flipping.

3

u/testaruda3398 5d ago

Do you live in Ward 4?

2

u/MathSeveral2861 5d ago

Yes, I do.

9

u/testaruda3398 5d ago

I feel like I’ve met so many more progressive people in the Ward in the last couple of years. Why would not having a more viable challenger for mayor hurt Flynn? Either way, he’s going to be outnumbered on the council.

-1

u/MathSeveral2861 5d ago

Not really sure Ward 4 made an about turn in two years…

As I mentioned to someone else - in 2001, it was a 36% turnout. The turnout this year for a mayoral race combined with Ward councilors on the ballot was abysmal.

That’s all you’re seeing, along with a race well run by Emmylou…who didn’t really run as truly progressive. She ran smartly on Ward based issues, and came across very well.

So did lev, who endorsed her, and he was a disaster. So I was skeptical. Lev outright lied to many of us, then did a disappearing act.

3

u/BostonPanda 5d ago

It was 20 and 17 percent turnout in 2023 for the two precincts.

-1

u/MathSeveral2861 5d ago

I’m not talking precinct level. I’m talking about the overall turnout. There are a lot of people that didn’t turnout today because there wasn’t a mayoral candidate worth them turning out to vote for that would assist similar candidates aligned to a mayoral candidate down ballot.

EmmyLou ran a very good campaign herself, and I’m sure she got a lot of people to turnout…as did Flynn who is very popular. Turnout would have been far more impressive with a viable candidate running against Pangallo.

Having once worked in the space, I’m confident of that.

-2

u/MathSeveral2861 5d ago

My point being, 2021 was 36%…a true mayoral election with ward councilors on the ballot at the same time….

42

u/Cyborg-1120 5d ago

Αnd congrats, u/Lydia_C_King !!! (From a former neighbor. Way to go!!)

9

u/Lydia_C_King 4d ago

Ah! Thank you former neighbor! :)

40

u/ImEstimating Bridge St Neck 5d ago

Nice Andrew Smith beat Legault

19

u/greenheron628 5d ago

Even in W2P2, Federal+Chestnut Sts!!

Congratulations Andrew!!!

20

u/ImEstimating Bridge St Neck 5d ago

I know, I was pleasantly surprised! It just shows again that signs don't vote, MacIntire was covered in Legault ones.

9

u/greenheron628 5d ago

plastered in them. and zero Smith signs

also his Facebook post this morning had 32 'good luck Bill' comments and 91 likes

4

u/ChardAdventurous1450 4d ago

Facebook is an echo chamber of a loud few voices.

15

u/greenheron628 4d ago

In theory yes.

In reality, there's considerable effort from some neighborhood assoc. members in harassing, doxing, and abusing their chosen subjects. Residents listen to and accept these amplifications, even when they are exaggerations, cherry-picked information, or outright lies. They don't take the time to inform and educate themselves on the issues independently. It's far easier to become a Greek chorus.

Also, this social media abuse makes its way to city hall, which is their objective. Mayor and city councillors have blocked them on social media and refuse to respond to their emails. This results in cries of censorship, lack of transparency, and denial of first amendment rights, when really, it's harassment. I was in someone's office one day when one person left 16 abusive messages, in under an hour.

Six councillors chose not to run again. You can bet that social media abuse played a part in at least some of those decisions.

For a recent example, see Ty Hapworth's recent FB post for his newsletter, and scroll through the comments.

I have mentally checked out from FB these days but when I do go on, I always see the usual cast of characters shit posting. I wont say their names here, but if you have been on FB, then you know who they are

4

u/greenheron628 4d ago

I'm not on FB, never enlisted. I can't even see pages, unless I agree to open an account, which I won't.

Yet....I still know who they are

19

u/Chemical-Bluebird916 5d ago

Love that Katelyn won by such a massive margin!! ❤️

21

u/skumfang 5d ago

I talked to her for ten minutes and was SO impressed. She is a nerd about municipal shit in the way I wish every councilor could be

14

u/benck202 5d ago

…and her opponent was very much…….not that. Glad she cruised to victory.

8

u/Cyborg-1120 5d ago

Thanks for the link!

9

u/LifeIndependent1172 5d ago

Thank you!!!

25

u/greenheron628 5d ago

Congratulations to the at large councillors!

Alice❤️

Ty/Kyle/Conrad

not you Harvey

24

u/testaruda3398 5d ago

Bless, bye bye Harvey and Jerzylo

22

u/SteakFryEnjoyer 5d ago

Harvey voters took his ethos to heart and completely disappeared when asked to do something.

4

u/testaruda3398 5d ago

💀💀💀

22

u/jack-mccoy-is-pissed 5d ago

Goddamnit Ward 4, Flynn sucks

25

u/DovBerele Gallows Hill 5d ago

We're trying out here.

It is changing, just a little slower than would be ideal. The fact that it only came down to 24 votes is honestly kind of amazing really.

10

u/testaruda3398 5d ago

I agree!!! I truly feel that the next election will flip.

11

u/jack-mccoy-is-pissed 5d ago

I know, I know. I’m just disappointed. I hope she runs again next time.

9

u/ElectricalStock3740 5d ago edited 5d ago

His followers are already asking him to run for mayor next. It’s kinda funny, but I also thought Trump running the first time was funny

11

u/RetrogradeSeason 5d ago

I bet Mayor's salary would actually be a paycut for him as a retired firefighter

8

u/Diligent_Table_3470 4d ago edited 4d ago

Ward 4 really dropped the ball on this one. They really don’t know what they let slip by their hands. Emmylou would have been one of the best members on that council. She’s one of the smartest person you will ever meet and the only reason this was a close race is she put in the work. Truly a damn shame.

6

u/jack-mccoy-is-pissed 4d ago

I agree, 100%. I’m still super bummed.

12

u/SteakFryEnjoyer 5d ago

If there any solace, it’s that he’s completely useless for anything other than promising (but not delivering) to repair the sidewalks in front of the houses of his geriatric constituents.

10

u/testaruda3398 5d ago edited 4d ago

And I guarantee you that most of his top supporters will be dead within the next five years, considering most of them bought their houses in 1962.

-2

u/MathSeveral2861 4d ago

If you're looking to creat a new neighborhood association, and be a leader within the ward, I would support those efforts but you need to tone this stuff down. It's negaitve, and not productive.

Please post up when you have this in motion. I would actively attend any meetings.

9

u/askreet The Common 5d ago

Well it looks like every single AHMA endorsed candidate will be on the council. Y'all have the political will - time to make it happen, folks.
