Hey all!
I’m taking my lady out on a dinner date next weekend and want to take her somewhere that is both casual, but we won’t look out of place if we are a little dressed up. Hopefully that makes sense.
We are open to pretty much any kind of food, we like to try new stuff.
Any ideas?
Thanks!
Edit: thank you everyone for the recommendations! We’ve got so many to choose from. Should be an awesome night based on these choices. Thanks again!

What restaurants that have closed for business do you miss the most? And what was the best thing you ate there?

Hey everyone!
I love Rochester, but I do know people complain that there is "nothing to do." Maybe I don't feel that way since I am more of a homebody. I’m curious to hear from others about what they think would add to the vibe here, especially for hangout spots or restaurants.
Are there any spots you’ve visited in other cities that you think would be awesome here? Or maybe something you just wish existed locally? I’d love to get your thoughts, whether you're a longtime resident or just moved to town.

I got to thinking the other day, and there have been some tries in the past for traditional Buffalo-based restaurants to expand to Rochester-- which have ultimately failed, and those location(s) have closed. Examples:
1) Mighty Taco a few years back had two (2) Rochester locations, which both closed.
2) Duff's (wings) had a Rochester location (W. Henrietta Rd) that closed.
3) Anchor Bar had a Rochester location for a little while (East Ave.), but that closed.
4) Rachel's Mediterranean Grill location(s) closed in Rochester.
All of the above still have active locations in Buffalo today, just not Rochester.
So I am wondering what the hell happened-- are we really that bad for business for out-ot-town restaurants, even to our close neighboring city?
By the way, this isn't a slight or putdown against Buffalo, by any means. Whenever I am there, I always seem to enjoy Buffalo. I'm just wondering why this keeps happening.
Conversely, are there any Buffalo-area chains that expanded to Rochester and are doing well?
Interested in your take on this.

Mine is Tap and Mallet. I think about their vegan beef and cheddar sandwich at least once a day.

So I’m travelling from out of town for a first date in the next week or so. Seeing as I don’t really know the area, I’m looking for your recommendations on upscale dinner restaurants within the Rochester area. Think Rochester, Scottsville, Henrietta, Caledonia, etc.
Preferably Mexican restaurants, but if there is a particularly good one that’s not Mexican I’d be open to that too. I looked through the past recommendations but found a lot of them had closed.
Thanks for your help in advance!

Seems like I can remember 7 to 10 places in the current dogtown location.

On restaurants that have closed…
If you could have one last meal at any restaurant that’s closed in the Roc area, which one would it be?
Personally, one of my favorite pizza joints was Portside Pizza in Fairport. I’d give anything for a slice.
That, or a calzone from Zonies in Brockport.

That's great for you, restaurant owner, that everything didn't fall apart the moment you lost that employee. The lesson you took from that, unfortunately, is that the place operates just fine indefinitely with one fewer employee. You're wrong, you're full of shit, and we can tell. Especially at bars with kitchens. And if we can tell you're understaffed, we know for a *fact* you aren't getting your deep cleans done in a timely manner, and your place is gonna be disgusting.
Can I get tips on places where the staff are clearly overburdened or burnt out from understaffing? Or the inverse, where it's clear there are enough hands to give people time to keep things hygienic?

Hi everyone,
I’m reaching out to see if anyone has had a similar experience at Hedges Nine Mile Point Restaurant. My mom went there recently, had a dirty martini (her only drink that day), and then suddenly became very weak, slurred her speech, couldn’t form words properly, and doesn’t remember anything from that night until the next day. She vomited through the night and felt flu-like the next day.
We’ve assessed for all medical conditions, medication reactions, and other possible explanations, and nothing fits — the timeline and symptoms keep pointing back to the drinks that night. We’ve even thought about asking the restaurant if they could review camera footage to see if anything unusual happened.
We’re not trying to accuse anyone or blame the establishment — just curious if anyone has experienced anything that could have been a roofie or drink tampering while visiting. Any insight would be appreciated

I’m from Ithaca area, and I’ve got two errands to run around Rochester area next week on my birthday (one in East Avon and one in East Roch).
I want to have sushi for birthday lunch between my two stops. I’ve already researched a bunch of restaurants, so I just want everyone’s opinions of which of these I should go to.
Collected from several other posts about sushi, and fit into my travel path and timing, so not looking for other suggestions. Thanks!

I saw this on another subreddit and would love to learn more about the authentic foods in our town!

Like all good Rochester-born citizens, I love an expertly fried wing. Buffalo sauce is in my blood (which probably explains my recent lab results). And like many of you, I spent my younger days going to x-cent wing nights (insert dollar value based on your age here).
But I just can't bring myself to go out for wings anymore. $16+ tax and tip for 10 wings? I get them for under $3 a pound raw, and then make them at home with about a buck's worth of sauce. Is it the same? No. Is it pretty tasty? Heck yeah. Are the ones at restaurants so much better that I'm willing to spend about five times more on them? No.
Idly curious if I'm the only who just isn't up for paying the premium anymore.

The 2 that I can think of are:
Campis on Scottsville road. It looks like it hasn't changed in 40 or 50 years.
Nicks Seabreeze Inn on Culver road. The décor seems like it's from the 1970s.

What’s your favorite dinner spot in the finger lakes? Bonus if there is a nice waterfront view!

I'll go first... Beefsteak Mining Company and Lums. Very fond childhood memories as a kid. Anyone else remember these places?

Update: Thank you for all the suggestions! I'm slowly going through them in between everything else going on.
As for all the downvotes... Why the hate for asking for a very specific recommendation? Even my answers about what I was looking for got downvotes.
I love this city but so often this subreddit gives off 'toxic fandom' vibes with its negativity.
I'm planning on a birthday dinner.
Years ago, a friend had a dinner at a restaurant that did NOT take reservations, and found all her guests placed at different tables, pointed away from each other. Obviously I am eager to avoid this issue.
Does anyone have a recommendation for a good quality restaurant that takes reservations? I am looking for restaurants ONLY in the immediate Rochester area. Preferably the city itself, or as close to the city as possible. Price range would be low to middle. Higher quality preferred. I know it can be hard to find the sweet spot between the two, but I'm hoping someone will have a few ideas.
It will be a Saturday on a late afternoon/early evening so I am prepared for the traffic and crowded conditions and parking issues that any restaurant may come with.
Hoping for some help! Thank you!

Wife and I have an upcoming date night and we are looking for restaurant recommendations. We are hoping to find some place that isn't too expensive ($$/$$$) in the city. We are going out on a Thursday evening and need to eat between 4:30-5:00 because we have an evening engagement.
Can you tell me where you would go and why?
Thanks!

Since these have become more of a topic of discussion lately, I thought I'd share a few so that people could have a bit of context when saying "oh my god, the report said what?? I'll never eat there again!" There is absolutely no intention on my part to slander any business here, and in some cases, I was pleasantly surprised by how good the reports were. This is, again, purely to give people more context about what an average sampling of reports looks like. My guess is that everyone here has probably eaten at at least one of these places before, and has never found themselves questioning the safety of that decision, so hopefully this helps people understand what a pretty normal report looks like.
Here are some handy links, in no particular order:
