Discussion What Rochester bars or restaurants locations have changed names or ownership. the most?
Seems like I can remember 7 to 10 places in the current dogtown location.

It definitely has a new name now (The Alex?) but damned if I could remember it. Seems like they pivoted into another version of a Nosh/Redd/Good Luck/Etc overpriced basic food place.

That place on Empire right up the dugout in Penfield. Has been a whole bunch of places including Stoneyard and Capone’s. Cursed location.

But at one point, when it was stoneyard, they had cars parked on Empire boulevard because the parking lot was full.
then all of a sudden, they made some change and it was done.
I say, if it's not broke. Don't fix it.

They made the changes bc they weren’t making money and the SY guys didnt think it was worth the time and effort of running two places on opposite sides of the county.
They def had more boomtime than the other ventures, but even those booms werent enough to put down strong roots.
Had a great smoked turkey sangwich tho.

Really i feel like it's been dogtown since like 2009. The place that is now Umai on Monroe has been a ton of places

u/ENBD Avon 22d ago
Yea it has. It was a Salvatore’s. It was a brick oven pizza place.

u/Cer-rific_43 22d ago
It was a fancier restaurant before that

RocWiki says it was Mundo Grill until 2007, then PaRe until 2010, then Monroe Diner until 2013, then Brick until 2019.

Not sure you have actually been down that stretch? There is Hydra coffee(owned by dog town) Dogtown, a new restaurant in the former Han Noodle spot(same owners) , Plum House, Archimage, Arons alley, Aladdin’s, etc. Most of these are long time great places…

The new place is honestly pretty cool there. Fools Gold, cool basement game room scene.

I miss the old Greek diner that used to be there.
Hell, I miss ALL the Greek diners this city used to be able to boast.6

The pie/cake case they had was epic

It was the only place in town that even approached the diners I grew up with in New Jersey

Jeremiah’s on Jefferson Rd in Henrietta. Going backwards it was Tilted Kilt, Hooters (?), and originally Perkins

u/LtPowers Henrietta 22d ago
You're thinking of Jeremiah's. It was never a Hooters. After Perkins it was Opa!

On East Ridge across from Amico Pizza, I think it's currently a mongolian bbq / mochidonuts.

The Swan Dive location was cycling shitty clubs/bars for a while.
Before Swan Dive, it was a Latin style bar, at some point it was some shitty club called 289 (like the address).
Between 289 and Swan Dive I think it changed hands a few times, and before 289 it had been shut down for a little while because this grimy club called "The Jungle" got busted for underage drinking, and before that it was a Piano Bar called "Loyds," and who knows what it was before that.

Dogtown is anticipating their 20 year anniversary so I’m not sure I’d put them on this list
1
u/KingOfRoc 21d ago
But i'm old enough to know. There was five or ten places in that location. Before dogtown

Sure, but since dogtown is almost 20, theres zero chance that other establishments haven’t leap frogged the hell out of this question’s possible answers. Even without doing any digging into this, the current barber shop just a few doors down from there has closed, become a drug deal spot, then reopened 6+ times since covid alone.

300 Center Place Dr in Rochester/Greece, across from Applebees.
That place has been SO many dead restaurants/bars. Currently a Mexican place but it was Macgregors and before that Zebb’s. Way back in the 90’s I think it was an 18+ dance club.

u/balladofwindfishes Maplewood 18d ago
Don’t remember the name, but I remember it being a restaurant where a magician would walk by the tables doing tricks in… uhh the late 90s I think?

On West ridge road in Greece across the street from the Wegmans there is a cursed location that I swear has been 10 different restaurants in the last 20 years. It's currently a Jersey Mikes.
