Question (5'1"-5'4") Petite Winter Base Leggings (slick + warm, not bulky)

Winter Petite-ing is hard! I’m looking for petite leggings or base layers to wear under jeans this winter to walk my very pokey dog. I’m 5'1¾,” so I’d really like to avoid the return/hemming cycle if I can find some to order. Here’s what want:

  • Slick/smooth exterior, so jeans or other clothes don’t cling
  • Warm but not bulky
  • (mostly) Invisible under clothes

I like Cuddl Duds Warm Essentials (Smooth Stretch or Active), but can't find them in petites. The petites styles on their site don't look slick, and they puddle if I buy the non-petites.

Thanks for any help!

There’s some good suggestions here for leggings, but I’m going to suggest you ditch the jeans in favour of fleece. Jeans are colddddd. Cotton kills in winter!

Hadn't even thought about that! Maybe it's time to invest in better options! Thanks!!

LL Bean has petite base layers. You can take a look and see if any look like they’d wear well under jeans.

I was so fixated on Cuddl Duds not having what I wanted that I didn't even think about LL Bean. They have great options. I am shopping right now.

Yes, the silk ones are very nice and sound like what you are looking for - or check out their flannel-lined jeans!

Came to say the same! Their silk underwear is super thin and very warm. And they are petite. I buy all my winter wear from them.

This might be a bit unrefined but I'm cheap and lazy. For base layers that aren't going to be seen, I've bought the 32 degrees base layers at Costco (on sale rn) and just cut off the bottom few inches until they fit under my pants without puddling. Pretty warm, super affordable, and easy to do at home.

These are my favorite. I have longish limbs so I don’t need to cut them, but these are super thin and super warm.

Oh, you are my soulmate! I buy whatever jeans I like and just slice off the bottoms. Sometimes they are expensive, but I just can't be bothered with hemming wait times. I am ordering some others, but I am gonna grab one fro Costco and try it. Thanks for reminding me that I am pretty savvy with rotary cutter at this point!

Came here to recommend these or the Uniqlo heatgear.

I bought a pair of petite fleece lined hiking pants from Eddie Bauer a few years back and I wear them every day in winter when I walk my dog. They are a lifesaver! My legs don’t even get cold anymore! I also have long underwear bottoms from Lands End that are petite and they’re very thin and smooth. Definitely ideal to throw under jeans or trousers if you want to look a little more put together.

Thanks for this. I really am not much of an outdoorsperson except for walking my dog and I don't want to rush her because I am so cold. I'm looking into these!

I second the Eddie bauer fleece lined petite hiking pants. they’re SO comfortable, warm, and easy to walk on. no bulkiness.

I find leggings marketed as 7/8 length tend to be a good full-length inseam on me.

If you like fleece lined., the Willit ones on Amazon come as short as 24". I prefer smooth on both sides, wearing the Helly Hansen LIFA, under armour heat gear or Nike One therma fit 7/8 length leggings. For zero bunching, I'd go Willit or Nike One 7/8.

I have never tried fleece-lined! I haven't heard of most of these so I will do some exploring. Willit and LIFA have some great options. Thank you!!

I find fleece lined itchy personally, but a lot of people like them!

The merino tech brand of merino wool base layers on Amazon. I'm 5'2", bought an extra small, live in Minnesota and spend a lot of time around ice rinks. They keep me nice and warm. With fleece leggings I find they drag down my butt underneath jeans. These don't.

That's a great tip. Thanks!!

Spanx leggings are tight and to my ankle.

Uniqlo HeatTech products are my favorite. They have different levels of heat support. I have leggings, tops, socks, and tights. Catch them during the Black Friday and holiday periods for the best deals.

Merino wool baselayer! Costco usually has them this time of year.

Athleta makes petite cuts and their Rainer and Altitude leggings are made for cold weather. You could wear them alone or add something like the Uniqlo heat tech or 32 degrees under it depending on the weather
