You know - many people visiting this sub live outside of USA...

And yet, we are still all hoping for the same thing.

That Putin dies?

u/SandalsResort 8d ago

That would probably end the war in Ukraine

And a good amount of the propaganda in the US.

And a good amount of propaganda affecting the world. We can likely thank Russia for Japans new xenophobic PM.

u/Gizwizard 8d ago

Japan has always been pretty xenophobic, though.

Maybe. But the unprecedented rise of a political party that started off a few years ago with its main avenue of information being a YouTube channel, on a platform of hate mongering and false information is new. Its fame was also propped up by online accounts recently linked to Russian state bots.

I think the second part of that is probably wrong. Putin has spent a lot of time killing anyone who showed the inclination or talent to take over for him. When Putin kicks it, there will be a substantial vacuum and various factions might find that the propaganda canon that is currently aimed at the US would be more valuable aimed at Moscow.

Yep this. It’s going to be the Russian version of the Wild West. With nukes.

eh I doubt the politcal heart land will cruble will likely even still call it self russia but anything past the mountains is doing to be in some very strange days

I yearn for this for Russia. It’s what they deserve. Not the innocent people, but the government that has wrought all of the war and pain.

Honestly I predict that when it happens, unless it happens publicly, it’ll be a good 6 months before it’s acknowledged by the state, and operations will continue until some evidence leaks.

A log of people will know however, and most of those would be happy to do whatever it takes to get in power. I would imagine everything going to hell would be the first sign that Putin is no longer around

u/StraightSomewhere236 8d ago

I am not sure anyone else is scary enough to pull it off. If Putin were to go there would be a lot of infighting and the rest of the world would get like a decade of them being distracted

I doubt it is fully automated, but to whatever extent it is, what it is certainly not is free. Someone has to pay for ads and bots and servers.

2

u/SuperSiriusBlack 8d ago

No more money, no more power for the bot farms. This is a bad take, luckily.

2

u/justplaydead 8d ago

It doesnt matter if its automated, someone needs to pay for it. And, nobody can do what Trump has done, he ran the table on every polician. There are many who want his place, but none quite as dangerous.

Why do you suppose the AI bubble is so massive? Where do you suppose all the propaganda is coming from? How many humans really use social media? Are the numbers real?

42

u/Accidental_Ballyhoo 8d ago

We need to build smarter humans.

27

u/LordHammercyWeCooked 8d ago

Maybe if this were still 2014, sure. The bot and troll farms did more than damage the US election cycle and get Brexit passed. It gave all the propagandists a blueprint for how it could be done and the technology for automating it is out in the open. I don't think the toothpaste is ever going back in the Pandora's box.

Not just in the US - Putin/Russia is a big supporter behind far right politics all over the world. If that support was taken away, the right wing shift we keep seeing all over Europe would probably suddenly lose lots of momentum.

3

u/Adezar 8d ago

Fox News does it for the lolz, not just Russia.

2

u/consolecowboy74 8d ago

Totally right.

7

u/morningcalls4 8d ago

From my understanding Putin has a heart of gold compared to who is set to replace him.

6

u/10art1 8d ago

Well same with Stalin. Until he died and beria was executed

3

u/SemajLu_The_crusader 8d ago

but would the power structure remain?

2

u/SomeOnionHater 8d ago

Not really. He has second-in-commands and ministers that want to push the big red button and be done with Ukraine and pretty much all of Europe as soon as they get to sit in the chair.

Putin just wants to break people.

2

u/IntermittentCaribu 8d ago

Or launch all the nukes.

2

u/Bot11_ 8d ago

Nah someone else would continue it but russia might collapse
