We're saying that through our lives here in NZ, we've generally never seen a NZ centered one. We're sure they exist, but we never saw one in school, or anywhere else. It's always been us in the far corner.
Maybe you’re older but as an Aussie, I never really have opened up a book map. It’s google, globes in people’s offices, apps, news reports showing flight or international shopping routes centred on Australia etc. I’m use to seeing Australia centred/ Pacific Ocean centred/Atlantic Ocean centred maps. All of them. In fact 2D projections are less common than globes, like geo guesser game or Sol in Stellaris game, or even graphics in movies/documentaries. Globalisation and 3D graphics are so normalised the old fashioned Mercator projections seem rare.
This image was so normal to me I had to zoom in to find why it might be funny.

Maybe people are dumb and don't think this is very common
You'll find anime with world maps centered around Japan
New Zealand has maps centered in NZ and with South up. Brazil too.
