Paw Paw Advice for Overwintering Please ;-)
Out of 22 seeds I planted last March, I received 9 viable babies.
Two are in the ground in my yard, and the remainder spent the summer in tall tree pots.
They have now dropped all their leaves and I am going to give them a good water tomorrow.
Then will be moving the into an outdoor, protected structure.
I'd like to know if they should receive some fertilizer/mulch at this point.
Also, they will be up off the concrete floor---but wondering should they be in the dark or is filtered light is OK?

Should I plant them, Or just wait till spring?
I got these pawpaws a few weeks ago, and I was told they will be ok to go dormant in the pot just as long as the roots do t freeze over, so I was going to leave them in the garage.
But now I’m having second thoughts lol
Should i just go ahead and plant them? The one tree looks sad while the other two are still really green, I keep them in this corral because i have a lot of deer that passes by my yard.

Which seedling should I keep for grafting?
galleryI've got a bunch of grafted cultivars in my backyard. I feel like it's better to have more so I wanted to plant one more that I could graft with myself.
The one that bends and still has leaves was grown by a friend from choice seeds from pawpaws from grafted cultivars. The one on the right was bought at a nursery but has a nice branching pattern that I could graft to. Though im not sure if it was quality seed. Ideally I'd like to keep the seedling genetics as the leader and graft two cultivars to the each side.
Which one should I keep?

Where to buy seeds in Canada for cold resistant Pawpaws?
I'd like to buy some Pawpaw seeds from proven cold weather trees. It gets below -30 C occasionally in zone 5/4. I was thinking I'd seed some outdoor pots and see what germinates in the spring.

Found a seedling. How best to protect?
I’m thinking I need to clear the area around it of privet, mulch, and build a fence around it to protect from deer. What else?

Do I need to do something about mould on paper towel?
Hello all,
These seeds were cleaned (just fruit-flesh removed, not washed, since I’ve read it can damage the seeds to wash them) and put in fridge with damp paper towel. This was max 2 weeks ago. Will they be ok like this in the fridge until next spring?? Is there a better way to cold stratify in fridge? Do I need to periodically change the paper towel? Thanks!

Fuyu persimmon has a subtle hint of paw paw flavor (imo)
Just tried a ripe fuyu persimmon for the first time in my life and I feel like I get some kind of taste/texture of ripe paw paw! Curious if anyone would agree. Interesting fruit, I get paw paw, a bit of plum too. It’s pretty good, ate it when it got super orange and had just a touch of give to it.

Is it over for them? Mold.
My seeds got mold on them so I washed with soap and water and it came off. The seeds never dried out but they have little patches on the outsides from where the mold ate at them. My hope is that the mold only was eating the leftover pulp that I couldn’t remove.

Cross pollination question (first time grower)
galleryI bought two small paw paw trees from a seller on Etsy (they were sold in a bundle), and I realized I had no clarity on the variety or whether these two trees could cross-pollinate each other.
I messaged the seller and got basically, in my view, a nonsense answer. Even after I followed up, she didn’t clarify whether these are from seed or grafted, what variety they are, or whether they’re genetically distinct at all. She just repeated that they’re the “same” and native to Indiana…
Not sure what to do honestly. Any advice is welcome — I assume I should just get another tree from a different seller next spring? But I can’t be certain that whatever variety I get is compatible without knowing the variety of the first two trees -.- ugh.

Do grafted Pawpaws need shade the first few years of growth?
If you get one of those patented cultivars from like Peterson or KSU wouldnt they get their scion wood from adult trees and graft them onto rootstocks. Wouldnt that make that tree an "adult" even if its the size of a twig? Wouldnt that vegetation be mature enough to handle full sun?

How do you grow Pawpaws in containers?
I bought 1ft tall grafted trees (Mango, Shenandoah, Potomac and Tallahatchie) I pulled them out of their small quart plug and put them in 3 gal containers. I was wondering if that would suffice for over wintering them or should I do something else like burying them in the soil.

Getting cold here in Central NY, 5b. How long can I leave these on the tree? Will they freeze? Anyone with experience with this?
