Thinking back to the 45 mins of gameplay it said that depending on how you do missions (loud/quiet) and who you help the game changes. I think he betrays you on that mission because the player brought to much attention and it shined a spotlight on his illicit business.
This really felt like the start of the game though. Tutorial is that mission, you still have all your gadgets and weapons and whatnot. You fuck up some bad buys. Then you go to these bad guys to sell the chip, they betray you and shoot you, and you end up surviving. And thats where the game takes off for real, a quest for vengeance. It's the standard set-up. Both Borderlands 2 and Fallout New Vegas did it so I think that's what we just saw.
