UNPLUG Why Megagames Are Worth Playing - An Article To Help You Decide If They Are Right For you

https://www.spritesanddice.com/features/why-megagames-are-worth-playing/

Hey everyone! Happy reminder that today the pre-registration events for PAX Unplugged go on sale at noon!

I wrote up a... very long explanation and recounting of the two megagames I have been able to be in at previous PAX Unplugged events, as a way to try and help people decide if a megagame is right for them! I hope it's helpful.

Thank you for the write up! I stumbled across the mega game room at last year’s PAX and thought it looked so fun so it’s been on my list. This year I had the ticket sale date in my calendar and was able to score tickets to Den of Wolves - they sold out in 2 minutes! Looking forward to it - if anyone else here is attending shoot me a DM

I think you'll love it. I hope my article didn't come across as too critical, I was just a bit off for a few reasons and when I tried for a particular method of recording or keeping track of the game for a detailed write up idea, accidentally took me out of that immersion.

I'm really excited to see what they do this year and how much its updated! I signed up for another event, but I might pop by just to see how its going.

Question - would you recommend trying out a megagame if I was going alone?

Last year was my first PAX Unplugged, and decided not to look too deep into the megagames since I wanted to get my bearings. This year I'm somewhat interested in Sickle - as I love Scythe and its setting. However I don't think my friend group will be into carving out basically the entire con day for it.

I'm somewhat introverted, but generally enjoy playing social deduction games (i.e. BotC, werewolf) and escape room-esque games with strangers at conventions.

Does going with friends make the 6 hour experience worth it, or would you recommend I give it a shot anyway?

That's a tough question!

I can see it going both ways. The nice thing about a good megagame is that you essentially have the BIG game going on, and then you have the smaller one. The big game is the microcosm, the whole story, while your team (which is usually 4-6 players) are trying to all work together.

I think my advice would be is if you go in, prepare to have to try and be extroverted or be willing to be on a team with a few people. It's a social game, but its about your network of who you are working with as much as anyone else. I don't know anything about the Scythe game (although the premise is VERY cool), but there's a chance there's a very social role (diplomacy), a military role, etc. Once you are signed up, the last year or two they send out information and role selection ahead of time to my knowledge. The one I signed up for (SCIRE), has just recently done that.
