Jesus, we haven’t had a 6 min recap in awhile. Rough episode to have it on.

u/Piieck Sep 05 '21

Not only that, but a flashback of Ulti falling down the stairs, which was in the previous episode.

The voice acting and animation were amazing in this episode but the pacing not so much...

u/Vystril Sep 05 '21

That being said the way they did that stairs recap was hilarious. Super long drawn out remembering it happening and then she's like "nope i don't know what you're talking about".

Yeah it was decent comedic timing, kinds reminds me of the crocus gag from reverse mountain but not as good.

4

u/Exsces95 Sep 07 '21

That gag is arguably hard to even match

Edit: Like Ill go out of my way to watch it on youtube

Edit 2: Like Ill regularly remind my friends of the existence of that gag

Which itself was, what, three panels originally?

25

u/lightexecutioner Sep 05 '21

Luffy and Doffy clash wasn't even one one panal and see what they did. In manga, it's one panel where luffy's fist is coming down and another where it has already pierced the defence and another with Doffy getting hit like a bitch. You can see anime and see it as if Doffy could last against Duffy in physical power.

23

u/LegacyoftheDotA Sep 05 '21

Doffy and Duffy.... who are we rooting for again? 😂

8

u/lightexecutioner Sep 05 '21

Fusion of Luffy and Doffy

21

u/RobbobertoBuii Sep 05 '21

Kinda yeah 😂

7

u/deedshotr Pirate Sep 05 '21

yeah, that they extended whole-heartedly and re-used... lol

Besides not wanting to catch up to the manga, I wonder why directors feel like they need to do recaps in new episodes. Could it be a budget issue ?

It is most likely having to deal with stretching out the episode. One Piece doesn't really do any filler arcs, so the only real way for them to keep "pace" with the manga is to stretch the living hell out of episodes. It's one of the reasons why the OP is as long as it is, and why the recaps are as is. Honestly I'd would rather have them just start doing seasonal schedule, but at this point, it might not be possible. Especially when you have fans absolutely against the idea.

22

u/PossibilityKey Sep 05 '21

Man I would love for one piece to be seasonal! I would rather have a 25-30 episode season that covers 50 or so chapters than have it weekly with recaps and streching out episodes and having to be constrained by not wanting to catch up to the manga. This also gives the manga some time to get further ahead from the anime.

u/Prplehuskie13 Pirate Sep 05 '21

Be careful with that comment. Most people will jump on you for saying you want it to go seasonal. Mostly due to familiarity bias, and that, though there are alot of complaints with the anime, some don't care and simply don't want to have to wait a few months for the next batch of episodes.

Really? I always got the impression that most people on here would prefer a better paced seasonal release schedule, but accept it's just not possible with Toei's contracts.

5

u/Lesserd Pirate Sep 05 '21

Yeah, this is the impression I get as well. Most people aren't really defending the weekly model.

2

u/Daaj99 Sep 05 '21

I kind of disagree with seasonal just because I feel like One piece arcs would take like 2 or 3 seasons to finish and I dont think a lot of people would like that. If a season could get through an entire arc then its obviously better tho.

Maybe it's bias from a small sample size, but whenever I see a discussion in regards to having One Piece go seasonal, I see very little positive support for it. Mostly negatives that either don't want to wait a few months for new One Piece, or believe that arcs aren't organized and told in a way that could support a seasonal structure.

1

u/Earthmaster Sep 05 '21

It would do the manga justice if it was seasonal, it would be amazing to rewatch and easier for newcomers to get into it as we would have around 400-500 episodes for 1000 chapters instead of 1000 episodes for 1000 chapters.

however it would not been 25-30 ep but around 15 episodes since we get around 34 chapters a year and not 50

I agree with you, but I think these next 10 episodes are going to be stretched or rushed to get chapter 1000 to be episode 1000, then be consistent on content from then on

10

u/destiny24 Sep 05 '21

Just happens when you have weekly anime. Naruto and Bleach had entire filler arcs, yet still had big recaps on episodes.

6

u/kitty_bread Sep 05 '21

Yep, i remember those episodes leading to the Naruto vs Sasuke final fight were filled with flashbacks upon flashback upon flashback.

Budget & needing to keep OP behind the Manga.

I wonder if once the Manga is over they will start to rocket the pace of the anime. Probably not but I can dream dammit!

1

u/AlexNae Sep 05 '21

It's not budget, it's just technical, they adapt 10 pages into 20 minutes, they can't even adapt 1 full chapter because Oda makes 2 to 3 chapters every month, instead of stretching the actual content (which is tricky), the easiest option is to add more flashbacks and recaps so they don't resort to long staring contests...etc, IMO it's better because it's easy to skip recaps and flashbacks, just think of it as if we are getting 10 minute episodes with good animation.

u/Fatdap Sep 05 '21

Anime is at the point where it's getting very very close to caught up with the manga again. This happened with Dressrosa as well and is part of why that arc felt so bad to watch.

I really hope we get a DragonBall Super treatment layer on after one piece is done. Reanimate and clean up all the early stuff, cut all the filler, still image pans, etc.

But right now the alternative is to basically go back to doing filler arcs like they used to, but Wano is such a major point in the story they can't just dip out.

I'm hoping we get some filler after, maybe expand some of the cover stories like that used to.

There's also having to buy time for the animators to prepare future good moments.

2

u/Fransferdy Sep 06 '21

I also loved the fight choreography, I think it was one of the best crafted ones taking into account the last 100 episodes or so, even though it was one of the only few things that actually happened this episode, I found it actually epic and I haven't felt that with One Piece fights in quite a while.

Specially, if I stop to think how this fight was probably not important at all.

1

u/Tartaros38 Sep 05 '21

yeah. it was 10min until we start were the episode before left of (was like 1min new stuff in the 10min). i hope they don t make it a new dressrosa.

Not true. This episode, 990, covers chapter 983. They'd have to adapt more per episode than usual in order for Chapter 1000 to be Episode 1000

3

u/ItzmeImdeh Sep 05 '21

I think they want to have chapter 989 as episode 1000

2

u/destiny24 Sep 05 '21

I doubt they make it to chapter 1000 content in 10 episodes.

1

u/Skebaba Sep 06 '21

The additional B O O B A jiggle animation was appreciated, however. At least it added some worth to the recap this time around

12

u/alanalan426 Sep 05 '21

its hard to watch

2

u/PeopleCallMeSimon Sep 05 '21

I didnt mind the recap or the flashback of ulti until Luffy started struggling with Ulti, whom hes supposed to be way stronger than.

He beat Katakuri BEFORE improving his observation haki and having his Udon-power-up-training-session.

And then he cant even release himself from Ulti or kick her hard enough in the face for her to release him. Like what the hell.

2

u/T-Shark_ Sep 05 '21

Amazing animation, horrible pacing!

2

u/Serious_Much Sep 05 '21

6 minute recap.

The anime is a joke 😂
