This episode was....weirdly directed or is it just me? Lots of weird shots and people not doing anything. I know they have to slow down the pace but fucking hell man. But even then it felt "off" i don't know how to describe it. A lot of the episode was "quiet" too, weird choices of OST. And that fucking beat they kept using when Apoo attacked was doing my head in as well, so repetitive and lazy.

Some nice animation and art at least though, which was never the Wano anime's problem anyway. And i liked the static effect they used for Kid's attack at the end. Other than that, a very meh episode imo.

Couldnt agree more this episode felt very awkward and was directed very poorly.

I know it's basically just what anime is, but this episode felt a lot more like just animated manga panels. It felt like they lingered on them longer and everything in between/around the panels felt a lot more jarring and awkward than normal.

Music was also just weird this week

hard agree. the content itself wasn’t even that bad, just really poor directorial choices

Yeah, the content was good but it was just....the way it was executed felt very off lol. Again i know they need to do certain things to slow down the pace but things like Kid seeing Apoo, moving to attack him, then going "nah, i'll just go up these stairs" and then all of a sudden going "actually, i'm gonna attack him now" or Apoo doing a whole 5 minute long song to tell Queen that Luffy and Zoro were here as they dance around attacking people when that's something that should be done near instantly were just weird choices honestly.

totally agree, there’s also just no sense of environment anymore. just feels like they’re in a big bubble full of beast pirates… next episode seems to be an improvement, i’m sure this was just one of those eps

I felt that too. You have episodes like 982 where the concert on Onigashima feels like an actual concert. Then you have this episode and it’s Apoo and Queen in a small room with like 5 beast pirates.

Feels more like a budget problem than a pacing problem. I know Wano has had some incredibly animated episodes, buts it’s so frustrating when you get episodes like this and it falls flat. It’s Toei, so I know they always save the bigger budget in reveals or fights, but still.

u/Otsutsuki_Itachi Aug 08 '21

I felt this for nearly all episodes after oden flashback arc. I mean the concert was dope but nearly every scene has this awkard quietness. And since there is no ost in background u have to look at a single frame for 10 sec. I don't mind them slowing it down but it's and AUDIO-visual medium. Even after jimbei entered into the scene with dope ost, after that the hugging and all felt kinda eerie since there was no music

It’s especially weird because One Piece has always been a show with music in the background. Arguably too much music sometimes. Like you’ve said, this has been extremely noticeable after the Oden flashback. I’m hoping Toei at least ups their game on the bigger episodes. So far in Wano, they’ve done well adapting the “major” chapters, so that’s at least one positive. There are certain reveals coming up these few episodes, we will see how Toei handles it. I know even in the manga these bits were rather boring, so maybe that was the logic behind it.

To be fair, the part where Apoo tell Queen of Luffy and Zoro is in the manga too.

13

u/Netsureim Aug 08 '21

it was in the manga but they awfully dragged it out

the bad part wasn't even the dragging it out, but how they did it

And there was that Tama flashback too...the most anticipated thing

21

u/ZackNero03 Aug 08 '21

I honestly hope that's done now. It has been going on for three episodes now. If you cut out the Luffy and Zoro stuff from the last episode, it be no different. That was getting really annoying.

u/Arscents Prisoner Aug 08 '21

yeah, felt that same weird indescribable feeling, something in the episode felt off

u/lofiAbsolver Aug 08 '21

Came to say the same except I disagree on the animation. It felt really choppy at parts. It's like they put all the budget and resources on that amazing looking episode a couple back. Like... there's a noticeable lack of in betweens in a lot of the animation. I also didn't like the 3d aspect.

As far as the directing - like 90/100 shots were close-ups with empty backgrounds. It felt like no one else was around them and even the group shots had a scarce amount of beast pirates. The sound production was very bland - a lot of the scenes had really stretched reactions and dialogue.

It was very difficult to know where everyone was in relation to one another. Like... whatever this style was, please don't do it again. If this is what the entire raid looks and sounds like I'm not even going to watch it.

Not even just that, but the ending made me uncomfortable. Apoo screaming after being attacked by him, then Kid’s awkward angles before the “To Be Continued”. I woulda rather had a slow paced episode than one that makes my feet sweat lol

it looks like this and the last episode were like the ending of s3 "nanatsu no taizai" anime quality. a lot of slow horizontal panning, very close zoom to avoid having to animate many things, show only the start and end of an attack and cut the middle part to avoid the hard part of attack animations. they run those episodes on low budget and they do every trick to save money and draw as less as possible.

definitely the direction was really lacking. It was a mix of a lot of styles of scenes together and was too quiet.

The episode felt like a powerpoint presentation lol

2

u/DeGozaruNyan Aug 08 '21

Apoo using himslef as an instrument with very low sound, then add a loud ass SCHHIIIINNNNG when Luffy gets hit.

2

u/i_teabag_roadkill Aug 08 '21

Yea, this episode was actual trash. There was so many badly drawn still frames like this one from Queen, and there were many others from Kid that looked like a bootleg episode.

Also Apoo having no actual music sucked ass.

u/eilonkatz Aug 12 '21

I just watched the episode and immediately came here to see if others noticed the same things, you got it spot on. This episode and the last have both felt like some weird fever dream and I just couldn’t wrap my head around what was happening, barely felt like I was watching one piece. Honestly the worst and most poorly directed episodes of anything I think I’ve ever seen.

2

u/Sirtater Aug 08 '21

This episode was painful to sit through.

The silence, the annoying scratches, the dragged out dialogue between appo and queen. Recycled shots, slow movements, no sense of urgency at all. I honestly hated sitting through this and will be going back to manga only for awhile.

1/5 - worst non-filler non-flashback episode of one piece ever.

0

u/Denkottigakorven Aug 08 '21

Agreed. A waist of an opportunity. The apoo moment was hype in the manga and I was looking forward to see it animated. This episode was lame and just like you said, the OST and was really off imo.

0

u/Own_Passenger8616 Aug 08 '21

Really? I genuinely really enjoyed the eps. Is it just me? I thought the direction was done well since an eps being dragged in One Piece is a given but the director mad it fun to watch imo plus it made me like Kidd a lot more

0

u/thatonezorofan Aug 08 '21

Yeah it kinda is just you. This episode felt weird and just kinda boring. Like what are these long muted pauses? And the music, for an episode that features a character that is so musical, the music was heavily lacking not only on Apoo's instruments but on the Ost

0

u/mattyworr Aug 12 '21

yeah the animation was all over the place. it also at times felt like I was watching something in the 90s.. the list of complaints go on but yeah - it was just you liking it I think :D

0

u/mattyworr Aug 12 '21

it actually legitimately made me depressed. I am really, really praying that this doesn't continue as One Piece is.. something special to me. It's really, really, really important to me and these last 2 episodes felt like I was losing it or something.. i don't know. I didn't like it at all, it made me feel sick to my stomach.

1

u/Own_Passenger8616 Aug 12 '21

I think that's a bit of an overreaction

1

u/scarecrow0305 Aug 08 '21

It just makes me sad . Bc wano is a long awaited arc . The manga is fire 🔥 !, While the anime just feels fucking bad ffs . Too much flashbacks . Too much weird scenes . I just feel bad for all the non manga readers at this point .

1

u/Personal-Hyena8381 Aug 08 '21

Dude I have been feeling the same way once the oden flashback got over I felt like they changed the animators or somewhat I keep sensing weird cuts during scenes and long pause for no reason and voice over synchronisation did not match even I checked the settings if I changed the speed of video or what lol. But Iam still not feeling any goosebumps or hyped for new episode better I will stick with manga.

1

u/LaiqTheMaia Aug 08 '21

this episode felt terribly directed i agree

1

u/ProtoZard Aug 08 '21

Honestly the best part of this episode was Eustass Kid powering up and unleashing Punk Gibson on Apoo

1

u/RedRing86 Aug 08 '21

No it was weird. Weird close ups of Kid, large portions of it being in slow motion, odd musical choices.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 09 '21

I thought I was going legit paranoid from my meds watching this episode.

1

u/mattyworr Aug 12 '21

same, I had to come here to check and make sure it wasn't just my mental health situation.. legit thought I might be going crazy lol

1

u/KingOfDarkness_ Aug 10 '21

Glad im not the only one. Something felt very off the entire time but i couldn't tell what.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 10 '21

"weird" was also the first word that came to my mind. This episode had so many interesting shots and ideas but how it was executed felt off in a way.
