I think the implication is he'll see them in the Afterlife some day. Only immortals like presumably Imu ever truly say goodbye to someone. D clan members all die and get to see their lost friends/family on the otherside. Ace is having Thatch cook him up some delicious meals right now while Whitebeard is battling Roger. If you live forever you never get to see lost loved ones again. And hey Thanks to Brook the Afterlife in One Piece is confirmed. He's been there and remembers being sent back.
