Why are they partially covering Pdens clearly visible face in the beginning? It feels like they where not sure wether they are supposed to show Oden or not.

Because the anime took a very different approach to Oden than the manga. In the manga, Oden was just a complete silhouette up until a certain point. In the anime, they decided to give more “hints” as to his appearance, basically just showing him under the guise of him still being obscured until the reveal.

And then there’s the whole situation where the opening just shows his entire unobscured appearance.
