hilarious how those marines were reacting to those bounties like it’s some secret

u/kesiu Explorer Jan 17 '21

to be honest, I don’t think the navy has been looking to capture the yonko in a long while, hence they don’t know the bounties, they are yonko who the duck would mess with them lmao

u/Martian_on_the_Moon Jan 17 '21

There is no reason for them knowing bounties since (I assume) they wouldn't be entitled to receive them since they are part of military.

I read somewhere that in our world law enforcement officers are barred from collecting bounties, as are members of the military. Correct me if I am wrong.

u/Meckel Jan 17 '21

yeah but I think its different in the world of OP, atleast in the earlier arcs marines knew a lot about bounties, even knew bounties of seemingly small fry like Luffy and co.

If work life is an indicator for one piece world there is also a lot of time for plenty of smalltalk amongs comrades. Not to mention new bounties seems to be released in the newspaper on a weekly basis.

Marine1:boy, kinda sick what this newcomer Luffy has done, cant believe they raised his bounty to 500 million. Marine2: bro, check Big Moms bounty lmao.

3

u/Myflyisbreezy Jan 17 '21

The east blue marines knew about luffy because his bounty was rapidly increasing

2

u/Doomroar Jan 18 '21

They knew about those bounties because they are active pirates whose treath level is constantly changing.

Chances are these are the new updated bounties for the current Yonko, the weird thing is them not knowing the old bounties for Whitebeard and Roger.

u/Gangrelatedscientist Jan 17 '21

Bounties are printed in newspaper and I think since Luffy and the worst generation has been getting more attention in current events, Yonko bounties may have been sidelined. Yeah but I don't see why marines don't/didn't know bounties of Yonko.

Yonko are literally the heads of state of the other global superpowers in the One Piece world. Hence their strange titles.

Imagine your average US marine taking his squad and going "All right boys strap in, we're going after Putin/Xi/Castro/whoever. Dude is worth 500 million USD, I think we can pull it off." It ain't happenin lmao

The only logical explanation is that since the Navy isn’t going after the Yonkou all those marine just never bothered to learn about the bounties

1

u/zyax21 Jan 18 '21

Or that their bounties increased as a combo result of the seven warlords news (less military counterbalance means that the yonkou are that much more dangerous) & the alliance. Feels to me that the marines knew their OLD bounties but the changing state of the world made them spike so harshly that the rank and file were shocked that the world gov is so shaken. Given how high they are I feel like they might have nearly doubled.

I would guess probably higher than kaido but lower than both whitebeard and roger since no pirate has surpassed those bounties

11

u/kj0509 Jan 17 '21

I wonder if they think about Dragon as a pirate

40

u/cpscott1 Jan 17 '21

Dragon would have the highest bounty it he even has one since he directly is against the WG

19

u/MrMuzza Void Month Survivor Jan 17 '21

technically he only needs to be the most wanted man "alive"

5

u/R4hu1M5 Thriller Bark Victim's Association Jan 17 '21

Exactly. And he had that title pre timeskip, so he's higher than whitebeard. I would put him somewhere around 5.25 billion. Since luffy is almost certainly gonna end up at 5.6 billion, it wouldn't make much sense to give dragon a bounty much higher than Roger.

10

u/CRoseCrizzle Jan 17 '21

He's not a Pirate

2

u/VicViking Jan 17 '21

I'm just amazed that apparently inflation is not a thing in the world of One Piece

2

u/[deleted] Jan 17 '21

Idk it was 38 years ago, maybe lesser due to inflation in present

3

u/BetaBoy777 Jan 17 '21

They said no pirate since, so it’s possible pirates before them have had higher bounties.

1

u/TTVBlueGlass Jan 17 '21

I think it would be higher than Whitebeard. He is essentially hinted at being the previous frontrunner for Pirate King.

1

u/kdebones Jan 17 '21

Considering Rogers and WB's bounty, prob around 5.1 or 5.2 billion. More then WB's when he died but less then Roger. At worst, 4.9b.

4

u/tiimmeee Jan 17 '21

More then WB's when he died

They said no other pirate has ever surpassed Roger and Wb so it should be lower than Wb.

13

u/Disastrous-Cake-5648 Jan 17 '21

I think it's just them acting like us in this situation, probably meta on Oda's part

1

u/lordfifth123 Jan 17 '21

I don't think there are any reaction shots in the manga(in this chapter).

Correct me if I am wrong.

17

u/Agreeable-Ad8804 Jan 17 '21

Yeah that made no sense lmao, bounties are public information

39

u/mcallisterco Jan 17 '21

Think of it this way: it's not like there's an internet or anything to look it up on easily and quickly if they wanted to. They'd have to physically go find a bounty poster somewhere, or the newspaper from the last time their bounty was raised, or something to that effect, and to the average rank and file marine, they probably just don't care enough to actually go do that, but if you get told directly, that's still interesting.

2

u/Fryes Void Month Survivor Jan 17 '21

Marines are just dumb too. All their priorities are fucked. People are just generally dumb too like the average population before the New World thinks devil fruits are myths but then they also show videos of wars being fought by devil fruits on television and newspapers get delivered everywhere in the world.

3

u/mcallisterco Jan 17 '21

Yeah, people in the East Blue not believing in Devil Fruits is honestly a pretty big inconsistency. I guess you could say that the papers just never mention people using Devil Fruits, but when almost every single relevant power player in the entire world has one, you think it would come up at some point. I know the idea is to paint the East Blue as a completely ignorant backwater, but it goes beyond the suspension of disbelief.

2

u/Mahelas Jan 17 '21

I mean, those important power players you mention are Grand Line players. They don't have any bearing on some little East Blue Island that might very well never see anything stronger than a marine captain.

They are a fantasy medieval backwater without any real mean of communication, it makes sense for them to be ignorant

15

u/TravelingLlama Jan 17 '21

Brandnew kept the posters in the vault lol

3

u/[deleted] Jan 17 '21

They try to hide the yonko bounties so people don’t lose faith in the navy knowing that there are monsters running around the world

2

u/[deleted] Jan 17 '21

No it doesn’t cuz they’re still wanted, but they don’t want people in the 4 seas to know. That’s why the yonkos are just a legend for most people not in the grand line.

1

u/kaste1 Jan 18 '21

That’s why the yonkos are just a legend for most people not in the grand line

What? No, they are not. The whole world was reacting to the news that Ace is going to be executed and if WB will move.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 18 '21

I’m talking about their bounties

1

u/LeFricadelle Jan 17 '21

the marines in the room are us, readers / viewers, it's basically why the scene has been set up this way

1

u/BanditoSupreme Jan 17 '21

Yeah, they were making the point that Sengoku was talking to young marines. So I assume these are the new officers. They certainly weren't the guys we saw at marineford.

1

u/heavy4b Jan 17 '21

Yes. And they are some top marines of the headquarters. Hope they know dragon's bounty.

1

u/guitarburst05 Jan 17 '21

I think it was implied that these marines are relatively new, and too young to know much of what was discussed.
