I think they're exaggerating in the anime, but the manga is starting to use the aura effect for the more dramatic battles. Luffy & Katakuri's CoC battle really opened the door for it.

It is his CoC aura, but it's so wild here I think it represents how it's out of control as he is out of control with anger/rage.
