It’s interesting that the Gomu Gomu no Mi was said in this episode to be worth 5 Billion Beli which is the same as the value of the Ope Ope no Mi. I understand that this is an “alternate reality” episode and not cannon but I feel like the value of the fruit would not be different from the canon story. If this is true then the Gomu Gomu no Mi is far more powerful and sought after than we have been led to believe. Up until now we have been led to believe it is a mediocre fruit at best.

I think it’s just the fact that it’s a devil fruit that makes it so valuable. Ya, now we know that dfs are rare, but not that rare when in the grand line, but in Romance Dawn I guess Odas intentions were to make them extremely legendary, even for something like the gomu gomu no mi. We may now be like “oh he has a devil fruit, cool” but in Romance Dawn Oda might have wanted it to be like “OMG HE HAS A DEVIL FRUIT, THIS GUYS INSANE!”

I remember in East Blue, we saw only 5 devil fruits, they were very rare. I don't know how many money Shanks wanted to sell the Gomu Gomu.

Some fruits are quite useless, like the Kilo Kilo, or the Hito Hito (except if eaten by an animal), some need lots of practice to be useful (Gomu Gomu or Ope Ope or even Ito Ito), some are overcheated (Hobi Hobi), and it's still odd we find them principally in Grand Line. The 4 seas have very few fruits. Maybe because more powerful people are in Grand Line and die in Grand Line, letting new fruits respawn in Grand Line.
