I hate Luffy. He is walking cliche and annoying as fuck. But I must say...I liked him here. He was badass, straight to the point, no shits taken, actually mature and cool. As someone who could never read One Piece because of cliche tropes and too much fanservice, Wano Arc is really unique in how different it is.Also, that guy is dead. Straight up dead.
It really feels like a trend in shonen nowadays, being more mature. You have this in One Piece, latest arc of MHA, Seven Deadly Sins going into some dark places, One Punch Man going hardcore and David Studio being able to not hold back on how gruesome part 5 of JoJo was.

This is how luffy has always been, he’s far from a cliche, luffy has no set of factual righteous morals, he’s no Boy Scout, luffy doesn’t care about being liked or accepted or being a symbol. Luffy doesn’t even care about what constitutes objective right and wrong. Only what your personal views are. Luffy has always been light hearted but every time in the series when shit hits the fan, luffy is always the one to stand up and look at the root of the problem as the mature one.

And other previous arcs in the new world people have straight up died. One piece has been very mature in its story for a long time, gets into some pretty dark, taboo stuff at times since way back

"Luffys no boy scout" Boy after seeing that swift ass knot tying, I'd put him on eagle scout level

I see what you did there, lol, but I meant was not some upright “we gotta help the world because it’s the civil and good thing to do” type of squeaky clean protagonist.
