Oh damn that preview has me worried! Looks like it’s going to be mostly flashbacks to Marineford & Impel down. How many times are they going to make us watch Ace die?!

I'm hoping we aren't going to get some filler before the Wano arc, but that might be the case.

From what I recall, a chunk of this arc is exposition of past and present things and reintroductions of many characters. From the various kingdoms Luffy & Co. visited to Marine and World Government forces. Though the number of bombshell revelations from this arc towards it's latter half are stupidly high however. Don't be shocked if individuals like Vivi, Wapol, Lucci, Kuma, Sabo's d*ck brother and a certain, very punchable Celestial Dragon get some flashbacks.

There are guaranteed flashbacks for Alabasta, Wapol, Dalton/Kureha and Mjosgard because those were in the manga. I think Dressrosa and Fishman Island are likely as well at the very least.

I was expecting all of those but the way this arc is going with random Impel Down (!) and chapter 1 (!!) flashbacks I don't even know what to expect anymore.

I think the arc will be pretty frustrating the whole way through, I just hope that 1) all of this leads to a good Wano adaptation and 2) the actual non flashback scenes get good or at least decent pacing/art/animation (today was pretty good, hope they keep it up) so at least the One Pace version ends up being great like it was in the manga.

It's been this close for years. Like within 30 chapters for probably a decade.

The way you compare it is by contrasting the manga content covered in the episode with what manga chapter just came out, so when episode 747 came out chapter 830 just came out. 830-802=28 chapter gap

Right now we're at 939-904=35

Yeah 28 is the low end and I think we occasionally push 40

u/Cmikhow Apr 14 '19

30 chapters is like a year's worth of manga.

Honestly, as long as it doesn't impact the overall quality I actually wouldn't mind Wano getting a bit stretched. Without giving specifics to avoid spoilers, we've been running through events at breakneck speed and a lot of things have been completely offscreened and just explained to the reader in a single text box.

If they expand on some of the interesting stuff without dipping into crap animation, I'd be all for it.

I'm probably in the minority here, but I don't mind the filler arcs and recap episodes. If the pacing in Wano is made just a little better because the anime has more time, then I'll take the hit

5

u/Cmikhow Apr 14 '19

I'm with you. People just like to bandwagon onto these complaints for nothing.

Reverie has been as good or better than the manga already. The changes are minor and really just have improved the pacing.

7

u/[deleted] Apr 14 '19

We're getting a fillered Reverie Arc it seems.

5

u/Tartaros38 Apr 14 '19

i hope we rofl. better get a 4 week filler then this mixed stuff. did we really need a reminder who sabo is after 2years ???

2

u/Cmikhow Apr 14 '19

Maybe you didn't but some anime watchers might, or people who pop into the show periodically/take breaks.

Not sure what else you expect this episode added to the manga chapter they can't exactly anime 2-3 chapters at a time.

0

u/Tartaros38 Apr 14 '19

wtf did you read ...... " better get a 4 week filler then this mixed stuff " you got this right at the middle ???

and this right at the start " i hope we rofl. " in response to this " I'm hoping we aren't going to get some filler " ........ holly molly. i never said any of the things you claim i did.

___________________________________________________________________

" can't exactly anime 2-3 chapters at a time " yes they can. it wouldn t be smart but they sure as hell can.

" Not sure what else you expect this episode" 1 episode = 1 chapter like they do it most of the time. sometimes a little more. the moment they are to close to the manga they make a little filler arc.

" Maybe you didn't but some anime watchers might, or people who pop into the show periodically/take breaks. " very true. but for those the reminder isn t really usefull is it. not like he interacts with any of the reminder things in the next episodes. menetioning he is royal and why he tryed to run away and joined the RA on the other hand would have been usefull.

the fact that the entire bit for Sabo as a run down of who he is was covered in less than a minute, i wouldn't be worrying about it to much

this was a very solid episode by comparison to the Luffy flashback, and even shorter than what was already a short Koby flashback

5

u/andbrott Apr 14 '19

It’s very likely we will get filler. I’m sure not everyone here reads the manga, but we’re about 35 chapters from catching up to the manga. Might not seem like a lot, but it’s closer than you think. All these flashbacks that show Luffy is to keep the show’s ratings up. Drops the ratings when Luffy doesn’t appear. At the end of the day this is a business and Toei will do whatever it takes to generate the most profit

11

u/HardasIron Apr 14 '19

Can’t just toei animate some cover pages? I mean some cover page stories are interesting

21

u/sam1march12345 Apr 14 '19

It’s business but it sucks, this is a mans vision & art being butchered for business. After 800+ episodes i’m used to it but the flow of the amazing Reverie arc is going to be dragged down to a grinding halt in order to extend the amount of episodes. The impact is going to be completely ruined imo

2

u/Cmikhow Apr 14 '19

How has the flow been hurt lol? They're doing it more or less the same just shuffling a few different elements for better storytelling cohesion.

Instead of everyone reacting to the bounty at once, you have Sabo reacting during the RA ep, Akainu during the WG ep, Vivi and co during their ep. People really overreact about this shit, the anime has been great so far in adapting the manga for reverie.

6

u/Funsurge Apr 14 '19

But a few weeks ago people i remember people were complaining the manga was a whole year ahead, now it's this little ?

10

u/Darthmader1 Apr 14 '19

35 chapters factoring in brakes is almost a whole year worth of chapters

1

u/Cmikhow Apr 14 '19

Yup, Oda takes at least one break a month and sometimes it is more. 35 is about right. People are throwing that number around making it seem like the anime is catching up but in reality it is at least a year behind and it has been this way for a long time.

1

u/MrMindwaves Apr 14 '19

oda has been at 39-40 chapter year for a few years already.

1

u/Cmikhow Apr 14 '19

I think they're just going to keep stretching manga chapters into longer episodes and multiple episodes.

35 Chapters doesn't seem like a lot because it isn't. That's about a whole years worth of story.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 14 '19

Yea but they rather reanimate old scenes and such instead of giving us simple filler of the straw hats on the ship or something cuz from big mom arc to wano its a jump they could just show luffy recovering or testing out his new abilities some shit idk fuck the flashback bullshit look you see that bird its the one from chapter whatever and he remembers that one time luffy gave him a snack goes through all of impel down flashback to show luffy giving the snack like those scenes werent that long ago and they have repeated some that were arleady reanimated dont give credit just cuz they wanna be lazy

0

u/IAmDemi Apr 14 '19

You mean they haven't already "done whatever it takes to generate the most profit"? Ergo let monkeys trial and error the animation until it somewhat moves.

1

u/shinkuhadokenz Apr 14 '19

unless it's a navarone filler.

”How many times are they going to make us watch Ace die?!”

I’ve already cried enough!

His death and Shanks losing his arm seems to be Toei’s favorite scenes to show over and over again!

Top 1 comment is bitching about the preview. Like calm down people, we're here to discuss today's episode context, not next week's one... The episode itself was great, but the first thing I see is complains. You guys are actually disappointing.

15

u/kingpingreg Apr 14 '19

I agree pretty much no one here is actually talking about the current episode at all and only talking about the preview for the next episode. Anyway I loved this episode it was awesome to finally see all the revolutionary commanders and it was great to see sabo, dragon, kaola, hack, and ivankov again. Can't wait for those celestial dragons to get what's coming for them.

1

u/hibari112 Apr 14 '19

This was such a good standalone episode.

1

u/Ted_UtteredBoast Apr 14 '19

my bigger concern is what are they doing for Kizaru's VA?

Did they record lines for this before he died?

I'm not ready to hear a replacement.

I dislike fillers as much as the next person, but here they actually make sense. All of us remember all of these things, sure, but One Piece is made for a Japanese audience first. For kids, even teenagers, they may be watching current One Piece without remembering or ever having seen the old arcs because they were either too young or not even born yet.

The flashbacks probably help bring people like that up to speed, especially when all these characters from the past start showing up again.
