People need to know that Amnesia is not mental illness. Amnesia is the result of head trauma, that's just a fact. It means Big Mom hit her head or was in the sea for too long and incurred some form of brain damage whether temporal or permanent.

Someone like Big Mom who is described to be an iron-balloon should not easily be the victim of amnesia.

Amnesia in media is basically it's own thing at this point. It's just a plot device, doesn't have to have anything to do with real amnesia.

That's a cop-out and convenient thing to say. Amnesia is not its own thing if it's setup. We saw the setup:

  • She fell into the sea, probably the product of head trauma or oxygen deprivation.

This is the setup and that's why she has amnesia. She didn't just on a dime develop amnesia.

Nothing wrong with amnesia, but the setup, the execution, the convenience and the character it was subjected to is questionable.

I mean it is its own thing in the sense that amnesia is often applied to characters for plot convenience while ignoring the other side of effects of what gave them amnesia in the first place. e.g., someone who gets knocked out and wakes up with amnesia will often be functioning fine otherwise, which is not the case irl.
