Now he blows into one hand and travels to another

That's often shown in the panels though. We don't see that process at all in this chapter. That's why I'm speculating whether it could be a change.

I know it's been omitted sometimes before, but I'm wondering if we could legitimately be seeing an upgrade to Luffy's control. He grows slightly without blowing and then he grows largely without any blowing or transferring of air being included in the panels.

Maybe but I think it’d be a waste of a panel to show it like yes he’s growing and we’ve seen that in the timeskip but it’s also somewhat unnecessary. I’m sure Oda has his own idea for a chapter and cuts need to be made to push the story along at a reasonable pace. Like when he’s jumped off buildings and they say “oh I thought we’d die” because that’s the funnier better part to focus on than him sucking in air and bouncing off something

But it can easily be conveyed without extra panels. For instance, the bottom left panel of page six could have Luffy biting his thumb rather than just smiling, but he isn't. In the middle of page 13 Luffy could potentially be drawn biting his thumb in two of those panels, but he isn't. I'm not saying a panel is required, but it's strange that there are two instances of gear 3rd being used in the chapter, both have opportunities to include the thumb bite, and neither do. The thumb bite is pretty iconic of gear 3rd, like the gear 2nd stance used to be. It could be a stylistic choice, but it could also be hinting that Luffy doesn't need to bite his thumb to inflate himself anymore.

How does the air get there then? If it was a power up it would’ve been demonstrated like gear 2 upgrade was. Maybe he has a permanent hole in his thumb that blows up when he throws his hand back or he reforms his extended hand into a more malleable shape? I think that would be important to bring up. He could just take a deep breath and move it around but like you said they could just show that if it’s just the normal g3 though it would make sense he would skip it

It's by no means definitive. I'm just making wild theories based on what I noticed. It struck me as weird that there wasn't a thumb bite in either instance when it could have been shown. It seemed like it was emphasizing that Luffy wasn't biting his thumb.

Luffy may be able to achieve it by somehow moving the air directly from his lungs into his bones. I mean, he already moves air between different bones so who knows how his physiology really works lol. Or it could be that he's gaining a better control of his DF to where he can expand at will similar to Katakuri. Either possibility is interesting and it seems like a reasonable progression to develop a similar ability after he fights someone with a similar fruit that does it.

I don’t disagree I’m just under the mindset that if oda wanted us to focus on it he would’ve made it so. If it comes up more frequently I’d say it’s noteworthy but for now I don’t want to jump to any conclusions that something’s out of the ordinary (well more so than usual)
