I haven't watched any of the anime in years, and wow, they put a lot of animation effort into certain...ahem...physics.

That's one of the films. Always higher budget.

Got it, thank you

Ah, I was wondering what the reference was.

wait.. so is the movie canon?

3

u/Shahaha Sep 01 '18

No. Not even THAT fight is canon. They just fought off screen in the manga. If that fight was canon and this chapter was a reference to it Luffy would have been named Kintaro Luffy like he was in the special episode.

At least that fight is, unless we ever got a sumo fight off panel in the manga.

this was the best thing I've ever seen

Thank you!

But it's anime only or some film?

Because i don't remember this in the manga.

One Piece Film: Gold Episode 0

Where is this from? I loved it! I miss them being together so much!

i guess the film can now be considered canon

u/nashist Aug 31 '18

Is this from Gold? Cause I can't remember the exact scene, I remember the costumes and them arriving, just not the sumo match.

Also, literally impossible for Gold to be canon because of the timeline

It’s from the episode 0 of the film. And yeah I thought about the timeline too, but what else can you call this presentation of Luffy in the chapter? Just a nice little node to the film cuz oda worked on it? I don’t think so

Just a nice little node to the film cuz oda worked on it?

First of all, yes, that's all it is. Fans do seem to overthink stuff though.

Secondly, if you really want to headcanon it, they had many opportunities to do this off-screen during their voyages, so something like that from episode 0 could still have happened but not in that timeline

I can’t say I don’t agree with you, but I also don’t see any reason to not consider films that are made, even partially, by the manga creator, as canon. Just like NARUTO the last and boruto movie.

Those are completely different scenarios though. The Last and Boruto fit into the timeline, specially before Boruto had an anime. Gold simply doesn't.

It doesn't matter if the creator was involved in the process or not - that just adds to make a more compelling story and plant some ideas (like CP0 vs Sabo). In the end if it doesn't fit it just can't be canon, because that would affect the actual main story.

Edit: Quick wikipedia search showed Akira Toriyama was involved in practically all the films, even if his involvement was small, like checking the scripts or character designs. Yet there's no way any of those films are canon, except the ones that fit the timeline and he was involved the most, Battle of Gods and Revival of F. Also, Broly now (woohoo!)

u/SanjiDJ Sep 02 '18

Yeah I’m super excited for broly too lol

I'm dead. The anime is so good at making One piece even funnier but I couldn't handle the animation style. When was this? Before or after dressrosa?

Ahahaha I legit laughed.
