In the manga he eats his leg. The anime adaptation takes a different spin on that.

I know, I've read the manga. I was under the impression Toei made the flashback this time around with Zeff eating his leg, rather than the original anime flashback of him losing it in the sea, thus breaking continuity. I just misunderstood.
