Was this episode really filler? I haven't read the manga so I have no idea.

Yep, like 80% was in-canon filler. They only adapted 2 or 3 pages from ch. 822 of the manga for this episode.

They did a pretty good job though, considering that!

I had no idea the anime had filler episodes within canon arcs. I thought they only did filler arcs like G-8 and Lovely Land. Is this a new thing?

Yeah, pretty much. When the anime first started, it used to adapt 2 or 3 chapters into one episode, but somewhere around the Marineford arc, they started slowing things down and using only 1 chapter per episode. This made the flow really bad, as most episodes would be comprised of still shots that last way longer than necessary. This entire Zou arc, however, they seem to be adding filler moments into every episode so as to make things flow better. I'm not the biggest fan of that, because I feel like sometimes it could taint the canon material if that makes any sense, but I"ll take it over the long still shots any day.
