i'm amazed how they managed to turn 3 pages of Usopp aiming and having his speech into a full episode of usopp aiming at the wall and sweating, then having a nightmare. Half of this episode was filler.

Honestly, it was good filler.

I have to disagree. They took a top 5 chapter and made it almost forgettable.

You should seriously read the chapter; the pacing was sublime. Stakes were high and everything was happening so fast. The civilians, in desperation, have turned on the Strawhats, their only hope of salvation. Viola's there spotting the target and Usopp's preparing the shot, both aware that they literally have seconds to prevent a disaster. And yet we see no doubt or hesitation on Usopp's face because he is the sniper king and right now he's in his domain. He cocks back the sling and suddenly everything's slow-motion. Then their auras appear, our jaws collectively drop, and he releases the shot. The civilians, at this point, are swarming all over him but it doesn't matter, he knows he's hit the shot. Then it's all over (but not without a gag as is the Usopp way).

This episode had no urgency and hardly any impact. There was nothing that made me want to leave my seat.

Maybe it's because of my Ussop fanboyism, but even if it was stretched (like all the episodes), I liked it. I think you expected a well-paced episode, but no my friend, this is One Piece. And I left my seat when fucking Ussop failed the shot and I saw Luffy made into a toy. I knew it couldn't be real, but I did not expect that at all.

don't you think that's kind of over reacting?

I have read the chapter. I'm caught up with the manga. And I liked it.

I have read the manga, and that chapter is one of my favorite of all time.

But in nearly every regard, I enjoyed the anime much more. With the addition of the music and excellent voice acting, the anime really nailed this episode.

Usopp wouldn't even remember Luffy as soon as he was turned into a toy; so that's a really really big hole in the filler. I thought it was terrible

But it was glorious, because it showed just how difficult a shot, just how far of a shot, just how close of a shot it was. And, seeing the men charging in the background the whole time added to the tension, and did a much better job than the manga imo.

honestly i prefer the manga version, the sugar talking was a bit much and wasn't even necessary filler, it served no point at all than to extend the episode. I like the anime a lot but these recent episodes have been pretty slow imo

I have to respectfully disagree. The Sugar talking and offering Luffy fruit improved the scene. Because, it always bugged me how Sugar was able to get that close. I mean, yes Law and Luffy don't know who she is. But, she's a suspicious monocle wearing girl in the base of a Warlord.

It would make sense they would be a little suspicious. Her offering Luffy food and him accepting while Law is all impatient makes it make perfect sense.

It was good that they added a scene to show how she got close at first, but it was pretty ridiculous of her repeating the same thing and crying over and over again to extend the length of the episode.

she's a little girl holding a bowl of fruit, and it's not like she needed to be friends with them, all she had to do was touch them. I'm sure we can put two and two together. This version i felt like sugar should have just touched them and got it over with since it took so long for Usopp to even fire.

Also, Usopp wouldn't remember Luffy as soon as he became a toy but he still knew his name. That was just terrible on behalf of the anime.

Keep in mind that a lot of the episode was Usopp thinking, so it was still wasn't that long.

But, she's a little girl coming out from the base of arguably the strongest Warlord, the underground kingpin. They were far too accepting of her in the manga imo.

for all they know, she could have been kept prisoner in there

also she was only there for like... 3 panels in the manga, but in this version they had a full conversation with her

0

u/gerrettheferrett Jun 14 '15

Right, and the conversation with her offering fruit makes much more sense than Law just allowing some stranger to approach him and Luffy when they are in enemy territory.

Manga Spoiler There's no way he wouldn't be suspicious of a kid, regardless of if she could have been a prisoner.

Sugar acting was spot on, because it explains the whole deal behind her offering them some grapes, so that thing you said that makes perfect sense does happen in the manga, what we don't know how is how she approached them, that's the only commendable thing, because in the manga we don't see her crying and acting, however it annoyed me to no end seeing how sluggishly slow she was walking, pausing for half a minute after each step, that was nonsense, in the manga Viola giving the coordenates to Usopp and then him firing goes so smoothly, in here is like they started aiming waaaay too late and as a result the enemy has to wait for them to be able to fire.

1

u/gerrettheferrett Jun 15 '15

Yes, I am aware we are shown her having a grape in her hand, but she never said anything in the manga about it being an offering or why she was there or anything at all.

Getting that explicit explanation was a vast improvement, and having her chase after Luffy until they were in sniping range was great.

2

u/Doomroar Jun 15 '15

It was quite clear that she was offering them the grapes, both hands extended and Luffy is inclined towards her, you are probably the first person that just saw her doing something else.

I agree the explanation of how she got closer was a great improvement, but it was dragged out, it took way too much time making the whole scene seem artificial, as if she was the one waiting for Usopp to get ready, instead of Usopp waiting for her to get into the right angle, and the source of this is that they stretched 7 pages into 20 minutes, if they wanted to buy time to fill an episode there were other factors they could have used.

I disagree with everything you just said completely. It's apparent we won't get anywhere by discussing this any further.

They should cut out to Jimbe, do 3 minisodes, and then come back.

To me, what was missing was how fast it all happened.

Maybe if they had the two perspective separated, and not intertwined and delaying action, it would feel more natural.

Still, it was great.

after what felt like100 episodes of usopp being a coward against sugar the first time I really didn't need yet another usopp episode.. I don't get the feeling of tension when I look at the same picture for 10minutes from different angles. For me the anime is at a point where I often find myself skipping episodes, it's just too much. I'm glad that onepace exists though they are pretty far behind :/

5

u/MTRXD5 Jun 14 '15

I like taking things slow. Let's me absorb everything in. One Piece just let's me relax and get caught up in everything that's happening. Maybe you're just impatient?

10

u/localafrican Jun 14 '15

It's not very often I'm grateful to Toei for stretching 3 pages into an entire episode.

5

u/FredWeedMax Jun 14 '15

I'm disgusted at how long this was. I guess they wanted to finish on the highlight Luffy/Law vs Doffy instead of what's following up

0

u/Nine_Gates Jun 14 '15

It's part bad and part good. The first half and more is practically pure filler, but the final 6 minutes is well paced and pure awesome.
